“Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.”
Alois Eder, age 93, a longtime resident of Bernardsville, NJ, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on July 8, 2024, under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice
He was born on March 28, 1931, in Maria Alm, Austria, son of the late Alois and Elizabeth Eder. Alois was a devoted husband, Dad, and Opa. He loved the mountains of his native Austria and was proud of his heritage which he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
As the youngest of 6 brothers, he was only 8 years old when World War II started and could vividly recall his life growing up on a farm during wartime. Alois was an explorer at heart and was curious to see what the world had to offer. His curiosity took him around the world 5 times. In 1964, he traveled to America and in 1971, he met his wife of 52 years, Barbara, at Stratton Mountain Resort in Vermont.
Outside of his family, his greatest passion was alpine skiing. Alois was the Slalom Champion in his hometown as well as a Professional Ski Instructor in Austria, Australia and the United States. As an avid mountain climber, he ascended to some of the highest peaks in Austria. He earned his degree as a Master Tailor in Salzburg, Austria. After settling in New Jersey with his wife and kids, he opened his own Tailor Shop in Basking Ridge, NJ (Country Tailor), which operated for over 32 years. Alois also had a love for traditional Austrian folk music. As a teenager, he learned to play the drums and was a member of the Stratton Mountain Boys.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alois and Elizabeth Eder, and his brothers, George, Herman, Hans, Carl, and Ferdinand.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Barbara Ann Eder (Moore); his sons, Anton (Liesel) Horl, Eric (Judy) Eder, and Christopher (Stacy) Eder; his stepdaughter Dawn (Michael) Burr; his grandchildren who were the lights in his life, Thomas (Moni) Horl, Matia Gioeli, Jason Eder, and Haley Eder; his great grandchildren, Nico Horl & Jana Horl; his grand puppy, Brodie; many extended family in the United States, Austria and around the globe; and many dear friends made throughout his vibrant 93 years.
He was loved, cherished, and admired by his family and friends. We will miss him dearly but he will live on in our hearts and minds forever. May he rest in peace.
Honoring his final wishes, Alois will be repatriated back to his native Austria under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
