Andrea (Andy) Mary Kenyon Abbott, Esq., 67, of Delaware Township, New Jersey, passed away in her home with her family and friends by her side on August 21, 2022, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
She was born to the late Thomas and Maude Kenyon in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Andy graduated from North Hunterdon Regional High School in 1972, Lafayette College in 1976 and Villanova University School of Law in 1983.
She married Richard (Dick) Abbott in 1994 who, in a sad twist of fate, preceded her in death just 9 days before on August 12, 2022. They lived together in Montclair before relocating to Stockton 22 years ago. Andy is survived by her stepdaughter, Gwendolynn Van der Zyppe, and her husband Laurent, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ronald and Daina Abbott, many close and dear friends and her 5 loving cats.
Andy was a brilliant lawyer, a strategic thinker, and a deep subject matter expert in banking regulation. She spent more than 30 years advising financial services companies and banks while working for Strycker Tams & Dill, American Express, Moneygram International, HSBC, GE Capital and ultimately for TD Bank, N.A. as Global Head, Regulatory-Legal Department. Andy understood that, with her years of experience, she had much to offer her colleagues and embraced her role as a mentor. She was a staunch and loyal champion of each and every person who worked on her team.
Andy loved horses and was an accomplished rider, competing and winning in many Hunter events well into her adult life, including the Harrisburg Zone 2 Finals in 1998. She started her partnership at an early age with Sham, her pony, then moved on to Inky, a Thoroughbred, who was her Junior Hunter with whom she also competed against many local professional riders in the Regular Working Hunter Division. After a break during her college and law school years, Andy returned to the sport and found Miles, a chestnut Thoroughbred, whom she kept with her until his passing at 28 years old.
Since elementary school, she enjoyed performing in both musical theater productions and in cabaret shows, most recently at Phillips’ Mill in New Hope, PA. She had a lovely singing voice and her favorite events included the Fred Miller Showcase shows highlighting works of various Broadway songwriters such as Irving Berlin and Rodgers and Hammerstein (in which she soloed or performed in seven musical numbers.)
She and her husband enjoyed renovating their 1740 farmhouse over their 20-year stewardship of the home, bringing it into this century with a kitchen addition featured in NJDesign magazine, while simultaneously retaining the historic integrity and charm of the home. Andy even took hearth cooking lessons to be able to make full use of the multiple walk-in hearths in the home, preparing a Christmas dinner for family there one year.
More recently, Andy designed and had built a new home nearby that honored the feel of an English cottage and featured stunning views of the Delaware Township countryside. Gardening was a passion of hers, giving her much pleasure in both the planning and execution.
A joint gathering and celebration of life service for both Andrea and Dick will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2022 with the gathering from 1:00-2:00 p.m., followed by the service at 2:00 p.m., all in the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery, Rosemont, NJ, and to which all are welcome. Following the interments, there will be a time of fellowship and food at Earl’s New American, 2400 Street Road, New Hope, PA 18938.
