Andrew Anthony Nemes, age 93 years, of Alexandria Township, NJ, died peacefully as the sun was rising on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at his home.
Born in Islip, NY, December 11, 1927, son of the late Andrew and Helen Lutko Nemes, he had resided in Alexandria Township since 1970.
Known to many as “Uncle Andy”, Andy was the compassionate and caring man who simply looked out for everyone. A union carpenter with Local #455, Somerville, NJ, most will remember Andy as being the proud husband of almost sixty years to Adele Florence Nemes, and a proud veteran of the United States Army.
It was in 1953, while attending a dance at the “Falcons Camp” in Somerville, NJ, Andy met a young woman named Adele. Andy recalls there being just a ‘magnetism’ between the two and they dated for several years before marrying in the old Sacred Heart Church in Manville, NJ on October 13, 1957.
Adele and Andy continued to build their life together on a foundation of love and faith. They greatly enjoyed dancing all over Pennsylvania and New Jersey. From a polka to a waltz, the two were always on the go. They also were the informal parents of many in their Alexandria Township and greater Hunterdon County neighborhood and you never left the Nemes home on an empty stomach or without fresh vegetables from their expansive garden.
After Adele’s sudden passing in 2016, Andy did not slow down. He vowed to keep living life each day in her honor. In fact, he was driving until a week before his passing and continued to have a beautiful vegetable and flower garden each year, making sure the zinnias looked perfect in Adele’s honor.
The United States military and especially its veterans, were Andy’s other passion in life. He was the proud Commander of the Milford Frenchtown VFW Post 7857 for many years. He was devoted to ensuring that veterans were taken care of and he helped many of them throughout the years get the care and respect they deserved for their sacrifices.
As Andy faced his terminal diagnosis with grace and dignity, he reflected on life and said, “I tried to live my life showing respect and doing the best that I could. Respect is the ideal that makes the world work.” Thank you Andy, for all you have done to make this world a more respectful and compassionate place. May you rest with your sweet Adele for eternity.
He is survived by the many extended family and friends whom he considered as family.
