Burdette Eugene “Nub” Storr, age 93 years, of Glen Mills, PA, died peacefully on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, PA.
Born at his family’s home on Grant Avenue in Flemington, NJ on November 19, 1925, son of the late John William and Edith Jane Miller Storr, he was the fourth child born to the family and would be followed by two sisters and four brothers. One of the children born before Nub would die soon after birth, but was never forgotten by the large in number, but tightly connected family.
Nub had just recently settled to Glen Mills, PA, having moved from Flagler Beach, FL where he and his loving wife, Caroline, had lived for the past fifteen years. Serving in the United States Navy during World War II and Korea, Nub went on to work for the government for many years which afforded him the opportunity to live all over the world and in various areas of the United States, always remembering Hunterdon County, NJ as home.
He was proud of his nickname which was given to him by a local farmer at the age of six because he resembled a ‘nub’ of corn at the time. Well, his older brothers ensured the name stuck, and ‘Nubster’, “Nubbins’, ‘Nubulino’ among many other derivatives were heard over the years when lovingly referring to Nub.
A jack of all trades, Nub, in addition to his military and government career, always kept busy with various jobs. As a child, he worked for the famous Foran Foundry as a laborer, he sold seed corn in Illinois, he owned and operated a bowling alley, also in Illinois, and was the maintenance supervisor at the Flemington Speedway and Flemington Fairgrounds. In all his jobs, Nub was well respected for always working hard, but also for being a teacher to those moving up the ranks. Many people can say they learned much of how to do their jobs because of Nub’s guidance and encouragement.
Truly a ‘Renaissance Man’, Nub will be remembered as a person who truly just enjoyed life. He loved his family and friends and strove to be a good person to everyone. A jokester, he was not always politically correct, but it was always with good intent.
Coming from a large family helped Nub to realize that family is one of the most important things and he loved to spend time with them, especially his grandchildren. He was known to be an exceptional listener and was always there with sage advice. This made him a ‘hero’ to many, as he simply gave happiness out without asking for anything in return.
It was at the wedding of his brother, Roger, to Ann Heckman where Nub would first meet Ann’s sister, Caroline. The two would later connect at the Hunterdon County Fair where Nub was working and a deep friendship blossomed. Being Nub was traveling at the time, the two exchanged letters for over a year. Their deep friendship developed into a passionate love and they were married on August 13, 1989. Caroline fondly recalls Nub always giving her happiness and security, and ensuring that their two families would never be two, but rather just one group; there would never be a ‘step- anything’.
An avid fan of Nascar and racing, Nub also had an affinity for birds and birdhouses. He also greatly enjoyed surf fishing, four-wheeling, and farming which he did on his ‘country farm’ in Missouri that he maintained for many years.
To sum up Nub’s legacy, one only needs to hear a story of his time in Florida where he befriended a wild squirrel. He would, each day, feed peanuts to the squirrel who would eventually, on a daily basis, join Nub when he came outside. He would then hop up on his shoulder, and eat the peanuts out of his pocket. Nub’s patience, gentleness and realness was felt by an animal whose default instincts are to mistrust in order to survive. It is these qualities—patience, gentleness and realness—coupled with love, that Nub leaves for all of us who carry his legacy forward to help make this world a better place in which to live.
In addition to his parents John William and Edith Miller Storr, he was preceded in death by five siblings, Kenneth “Dutch” Storr, Paul Storr, Roger Storr, Grenelle “Slim” Storr, and Wenonah Stover.
Surviving are his loving wife, Caroline G. Heckman Storr; his children and their spouses, Fred and Sandra Storr, Ginnie Jensen, Tammy and Dan Funk, and Matt and Alyson Grouleff; his siblings, Robert and his wife, Gail Storr, Richard Storr, and Mary Miller; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack Stover, Bob Heckman, Bernice Storr, Carol Storr, and Anne Storr; eleven grandchildren, Derek, Josh, Kim, Travis, Jason, Michael, Dylan, Gunnar, Tyler, Julia, and Sara; three great granddaughters, Makenna, Evelyn and Elizabeth; his faithful puppy, Pepe; many loving nieces, nephews and extended family; and many dear friends.
