Byron was born on April 2, 1931 in Sewaren, NJ, to Leonidas and Alma Sullivan. One of seven children, Byron graduated from Woodbridge Highschool in 1949 and joined the US Navy, where served as an airman in the Korean War. He and Margaret met while both working at Woodbridge High School in 1966, and were married on June 8th, 1968 at Our Lady of Peace in Fords, NJ.
Byron completed a master’s degree in environmental sciences from Drexel University and worked with the NJ State Department of Environmental Protection for 36 years, until his retirement in 2003.
Byron was a man of many disparate hobbies, which included Tai Chi, skydiving, reading, and traveling. He was never without a book in his hand and read with a voracious curiosity that never diminished with age. The father of three daughters, Byron was fiercely proud of and devoted to his children and grandchildren. He adored his wife, Margaret, and referred to her in private as Peg-o-my-heart. Byron was invested in his community, as evidenced by his long-time volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and other local initiatives.
Byron was a devout Catholic, having converted while on deployment in Japan, and was a parishioner at St. Alphonsus Church in Hopewell, NJ.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Alphonsus Church, 54 East Prospect Street, Hopewell, NJ. A repast will follow mass in the fellowship hall of the church and to which all are welcome.
