Chester S. Cyran
Valued his faith, his family, and his Polish heritage above all else
Chester S. Cyran, age 92 years, longtime resident of Rockaway, NJ, died on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Center for Hope Hospice, Scotch Plains, NJ, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on February 12, 1932, in Passaic, NJ, son of the late Joseph Cyran and Mary Baran. Chester was a devoted husband, brother, father, and grandfather.
Chester met the love of his life, Genowefa Gieniewska, at his Uncle Al’s hardware store. Genowefa’s family was a part of massive deportations of Polish people by Russians to Siberia during WWII, when Genowefa was only nine years old. She is a Siberian survivor. Chester and Genowefa married on October 24, 1953, at St. Stanislaus Church in Newark, NJ. Chester and Genowefa raised two daughters, Elizabeth and Yolanda, and moved throughout Newark and Irvington, prior to settling in Rockaway, NJ, for 55 years. As a family of four, they traveled to Scotland, England, and Wales, that Chester planned for their 25th wedding anniversary. They also spent summers at the beach in Wildwood Crest, NJ.
Chester and Genowefa celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in October of 2023. He was the most loyal husband to his beloved Giencia. Even in his dying days, Chester did not let anyone touch or come near his wedding band, which was prominently worn on his finger for over 70 years.
A man of few words, but when he shared, his words went right to your heart. He knew what to say and when to say it. He had a heart of gold that was admired by anyone close to him, and a sense of humor that resonated with those closest to him. A true family man, Chester’s intentions were always aimed at guiding and supporting his family no matter what struggle he faced. He relished his role as a father and a Dziadek (grandfather).
He was drafted into the US Army, when Elizabeth was four months old during the Korean War. He was stationed in Alaska for four years. After serving in the US Army, Chester worked full-time at Allied Chemical while also taking classes at the Newark College of Engineering. It is undeniable that Chester was a hard worker, as he worked multiple jobs including Congoleum Nair, Sears, Two Guys, and as a taxi driver. Chester retired from Allied Chemical/Honeywell in 2002, after 35+ years. He took a significant amount of pride in his work and was steadfast in his dedication to his field.
Chester’s heart and soul belonged to his family and his home – that he single-handedly renovated himself. A self-taught handyman – no matter what needed to be fixed, Chester had the precise tool and insight to fix anything. In his spare time, Chester enjoyed researching family genealogy, working with stocks, tending to his rose garden, skiing with his close friend, Elois, building a fiberglass boat with his coworker, playing mini-golf with his family, and watching classic movies. His weekends were spent going dancing with his beloved Giencia and other Polish couples. A natural born singer, Chester was a tenor in the glee club, a lover of music; specifically Frank Sinatra, and he played the accordion. Chester and Genowefa were avid travelers and went to Hawaii, Poland, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Bermuda, Vermont, and Canada. He had a keen eye for photography and his skills were unmatched.
Chester’s legacy will be felt for generations to come, and he will be deeply missed. His beautiful memory lives on with his children and his grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph Cyran and Mary (Baran), his brother, Michael Chanda, and his granddaughter, Lauren Sbarra.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Genowefa Gieniewska; daughters, Elizabeth Resnick (Martin), and Yolanda Sbarra; grandchildren, Victoria and Jacob Resnick, and Dillon Sbarra.
