Domingos Antonio Alem, age 79 years, of Franklin Township, Hunterdon County, NJ, died peacefully at home on Sunday, December 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Born on December 23, 1944, in Northern Portugal, he was a son of the late Joao and Maria De Alem.
Growing up in a large, loving family composed of 13 brothers and sisters, they all, as a family, worked on the Quinta (farm) which is where he first met the love of his life, Maria, before then leaving for war. Domingos served for four years in the Portugues Military as a Special Forces Commando (reconnaissance), during the Portuguese-Angolan war in Timor of which he and his family were most proud.
Following the war, the couple were married in Portugal shortly after Domingos returned from war; they would then emigrate to the United States in 1970. Settling in New Jersey, Maria and Domingos raised their family of three daughters, Maria, Lucy, and Fernanda, with an omnipresent feeling of love and respect for all peoples.
Domingos was a mason by trade, and he proudly owned and operated his own masonry business until retirement.
With a passion for nature and the outdoors, Domingos and Maria spent most of their retirement years in upstate New York working on land they saved up for many years to purchase. Nothing filled Domingos’ heart more than a home full of family and friends, and their property was a place that brought everyone together where they enjoyed great meals, good drinks, and lots of laughs!
Though his time on Earth was shorter than anyone would have hoped for, the light of his persona will forever illuminate for the better the paths of all who knew him, and so many who did not, but who are better off because he lived.
Domingos is survived by his wife, Maria; his daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Scott; his daughter, Lucy; his daughter and son-in-law, Fernanda and Eddie; his grandchildren, Kaity, Kyle, and Isabella; several extended family members; and many dear friends.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, December 13, 2024, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
A life celebration service will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home, and to which all are welcome.
Interment will be private.
