It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Dorothy L. Skinner, 93, with her family at her side.
Born in Meriden on July 31, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Jean Lingner. She had resided in Meriden until 2003, moved to Durham until 2010 and lived the rest of her life at Old Kelsey Point in Westbrook, CT. She graduated from Meriden High School, class of 1947 and Larson Junior College. Dorothy was employed by the Lane Construction Company for 26 years as a receptionist, retiring in 1998.
Dorothy was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church, active in Pilgrim Fellowship, May Breakfast and Merry Mates. She was a member and Past Worthy Advisor of Rainbow Girls Meriden Chapter #11, Meriden Junior Women’s Club, Meriden Republican Town Committee, Meriden Hammond Organ Club and the Old Kelsey Point Hill and Beach Association.
She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Ferry (husband Michael) of Westbrook, CT, Deborah Best (husband Kevin) of Glen Gardner, NJ, and her son, David Skinner (wife Claudia) of East Haddam, CT. She is also survived by six, very cherished, grandchildren: Danni Best, Rebecca Skinner, Jessie Best, Derek Skinner, and twins, Kelli Best and Allie Best. Finally, a sister-in-law, Sandra Lingner and two nephews, John and Jason Lingner and one niece, Jennifer Duprey, survive her. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard Lingner.
Dorothy was an avid Yankee fan, New York Giants fan and loved the UCONN men’s and women’s and basketball teams. She took special pride in her granddaughter, Allie Best, who was point guard for Marist Women’s Basketball team following in the footsteps of her great-grandfather, Frederick Lingner, who played for the New Departure semi-professional league.
Her family will receive friends on Sunday, February 5th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 6th at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 62 Colony St., Meriden. Everyone is asked to meet at church. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Dorothy loved her two grand dogs, Ruby and Roxy, so should friends desire; contributions in her memory may be made to any Pet Rescue organization.
The family was cared for in New Jersey by Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ 08822.
