Edward J. Chergey, age 93 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born on October 6, 1928 in New Brunswick, NJ, son of the late Paul and Marie Pall Chergey, Edward graduated from Highland Park High School and went on to serve honorably in the United States Marine Corps. Upon his discharge from the service, he became a furniture salesman throughout New Jersey and worked hard until his retirement.
Coming from a large family, Edward was a true family man and had a sense of humor that drew everyone in; he was simply a personable person!
An avid Rutgers fan having grown up watching the campus life in New Brunswick, Edward made sure that his children and grandchildren knew what being a Rutgers Scarlet Knight was really all about and attended and watched every game he was able. Playing professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers when he was younger, sports was in Edward’s DNA and he passed this love of sportsmanship on to the next generation by encouraging them to always try their hardest and to respect their opponents.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by a brother, Paul.
Surviving are his longtime companion and best friend of thirty-nine years, his “Hunny Bunny” Bev Wasdyke; his daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Daniel Mullins; his step-children, Douglas Wasdyke, Susan Wasdyke-Pitchfod and William Pitchford, Judy and James Gonsalves, and Jean and Chris Humphreys; his grandchildren, Joy and her husband, Sam Byrne, Logan, Riley, Megan, Kayle, Hannah, B.T., Jack, Julia, Charlie, Kate, and John; his great grandchildren Charlotte and Kieran; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Elaine Chergey; his nephews and their families, Ricky & Joanne, Tom and MaryAnn, Dan and LeeAndra, and Jim and Amy; his cousins, Sue and Bob Hale; several extended family members; and many friends made as he traveled life’s path.
Committal words and inurnment with his mother and aunt at St. Peter’s Cemetery Mausoleum, New Brunswick, NJ, was private under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
