Harry “Lou” Lysy, age 92 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Raised in Manville, NJ, Harry was born in Somerville, NJ, on June 27, 1930, son of the late Maxim and Tekla Yozne Lysy. Harry was one of ten children and was the last surviving sibling.
After graduating from Bound Brook High School, Harry enlisted in the United States Navy on December 26, 1950, in New York City, NY. During his time of service, he was awarded the Naval Occupation Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. His most significant assignment of duty was aboard the USS Saipan. He was honorably discharged after serving over 3 ½ years but would remain in touch with many of his Navy buddies and attended numerous Saipan reunions over the years. Upon his discharge, he returned home where he worked as a laborer for over twenty-five years at Johns Manville Corporation in Manville, NJ.
Harry was an avid Yankees fan and if he wasn’t wearing a Yankee’s baseball cap, you would see him in his Saipan cap. On one occasion during a weekend trip to the Pocono Mountains, by pure chance, Harry and the Yankee baseball team were staying at the same hotel. He got to meet several members of the team including his all-time favorite, Bucky Dent. This was just one example of how he earned the nickname “Lucky Louie”. It began as a child when he won the 1940 National Marble Tournament in Wildwood, NJ, where he was awarded the Marble King Trophy as the Tournament Champion. In 1989, Lucky Louie attended the competition in Wildwood and donated his trophy to the National Marbles Tournament Association. He got almost as much press coverage for that generosity as that year’s marble champion! Lou’s favorite hobby though, was bowling. He participated on several leagues and was proud of his many “300” games.
As chance would have it, Lou met Carolyn, the love of his life, in 1976 at a German festival in Barnesville, PA. He asked her to dance and within a few months, he asked her to marry him. The following year they tied the knot in a civil ceremony at the American Legion in Flemington, NJ, followed by a reception with polka dancing, another one of Lou’s favorite things to do and of which he and Carolyn were quite good! Over the years the couple would attend many Polka festivals where they were the King and Queen of the dance floor.
Harry “Lou” is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Carolyn (Ringler) of Flemington, NJ; his three daughters, Janice Lysy and Debra Lysy, both of Naples, FL, and Karen Dromie Becker and her husband, Donald, of Raritan Township, NJ; a son, Ralph Dromie of Reading, PA; a grandson, Justin Dromie and his wife, Jacqui; two great grandchildren, Kaleb Dromie and McKenzie Dromie; numerous nieces and nephews who adored their “Uncle Louie”; several extended family members; and many dear friends whose hearts are better for having Lou in their lives.
