Jacqueline Patricia Klapp, age 83 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at Hunterdon Medical Center, with her cherished children by her side.
A certified court stenographer, Jackie lived in the Flemington area for more than 50 years. She worked for almost 20 years in the old Hunterdon County Courthouse on Main Street, where her funeral services will be held.
Born on March 16, 1941 in Neptune, a daughter of Joseph and Betty Klapp, she grew up in Freehold and graduated from Freehold Regional High School. She then graduated from Trenton State College and quickly pursued her Stenography training in New York City after encouragement from a close cousin who was established in the industry. Jackie was employed for over 50 years as a Certified Court Stenographer in New Jersey and New York. She worked for the federal, state and county courts as well as many local boards and police agencies. She also did freelance work for numerous lawyers and provided Notary Public services.
She truly loved and took great pride in her craft and made dear friends within the field, which is why she continued working up until two months prior to her passing.
She is survived by her children, Dennis Bakos (Kathleen) of Watchung and Melissa Bakos Costine (Matthew) of Flemington; grandchildren Krisztian and Maya Bakos and Griffin, Liam, and Daveigh Costine; and sisters Martha Klapp of New York City and Peppe Klapp Bailin of Houston, TX.
Jackie was an incredible storyteller, a pianist, pet-lover and avid reader. She had an encyclopedic memory of decades-old court cases, summations and verdicts but when telling any stories about the field of justice, she diligently altered names “to protect the innocent”.
She approached her personal life with even more of her contagious energy, verve and sense of humor as in her professional life. As best-in-class as she was in her career, she outdid herself by only her profound devotion to her children (who she raised on her own) and her beloved grandchildren, who she adored.
Family and friends will gather on Sunday, January 12, from noon-1:30 p.m. in the Historic Hunterdon County Court House, Main Street, Flemington. A life celebration service will take place there starting at 1:30, to which all are welcome.
