Joseph Francis Egan, III, age 75 years, of Clinton Township, NJ, died peacefully on Thursday, September 15, 2022.
Joseph was born March 22, 1947, in Montclair, NJ. He was the son of the late Joseph F. Egan, II, and Jane McElhinney Egan of Roseland, NJ.
He grew up in Roseland and attended Seton Hall Preparatory School. Joseph would go on to attend Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance and graduated Cum Laude. He would complete his education at Seton Hall University with a Master of Business Administration.
His career in finance began at Amerada Hess Oil in Edison, NJ. From Amerada Hess, Joseph would join the Johnson and Johnson family of companies where he would spend 35 years. At Johnson and Johnson, Joe rose to the rank of International Group Controller leading the finance function for Ortho and Lifescan globally. His career accomplishments include leading the acquisition of Lifescan and working closely with significant scientists to bring technology like human T-Cell markers into clinical diagnostic use.
Joseph loved our country and was active in trying to make the government more efficient. He was honored to have been appointed to the Grace Commission, along with other business leaders, to make recommendations to control federal government spending. He dedicated a year to working with the commission in Washington, DC, and led a team investigating cost saving opportunities in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
He had many hobbies including skiing with his family, gardening, attending Villanova basketball games, and vacationing in Kennebunkport, ME. He was proud to have served as president of the Hunterdon Central Football Booster Club, but his favorite sport was always wrestling.
Above all, Joseph was a devoted, loving, and selfless father, husband, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Susan Melovitz Egan; his children, Joe and Stacy Egan, Jennifer and Keith Janis, Katie and Rob O’Neal, Alex and Maureen Egan, and Sean and Emily Egan; his 12 grandchildren; and his sisters Jane Egan, Margaret and her husband, Jim Connell, and Kathleen Bickford.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Ariel R. Baitista Jr. will take place on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ, under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ. Everyone is encouraged to meet directly at the Church on Tuesday morning beginning at 10:15 a.m. Kindly follow the instructions of the Wright & Ford Care Team Family Ambassadors upon arrival.
Interment will take place privately at St. Magdalen Cemetery.
