Born on March 19, 1928, in Bozsok, Hungary, son of the late Jozsef and Maria Fruhstuck and step-father Ferenc Avar. He was raised in Bozsok surrounded by family and friends, and there his heart was always home. He will be returned to Bozsok for his final resting place.

Jozsef was a man who lived a bold, outsized life full of adventure, good humor, love, and kindness. In his early years, he learned the value of hard work, working on his family farm where he took great pride in his horses which he raised in the countryside of Hungary near the Austrian border. As a young boy during WW2, he and his family sheltered persecuted Jews in their barn, saving many lives.

After the war, a life of adventure and variety called to Jozsef. He served in the Hungarian army as a cook, moved to the big city of Budapest, joined the circus, learned to drive trucks, and became a barber. During his time in Budapest, he would meet his first wife Ibolya Szel Fruhstuck on the eve of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. As the revolution progressed, Jozsef returned to Bozsok where he cut the border guards’ hair, and heard about the best ways to secretly cross the border into Austria and escape Soviet oppression for freedom. In the middle of the night, Jozsef crossed the border as guard dogs barked and bullets flew overhead. Upon reaching safety, several countries opened their doors, and refugees had options to immigrate to South Africa, Australia, or the United States; at the refugee center the care package for the United States looked the best and thus a life in America began. Jozsef and Iboya were wed upon arrival in the United States at Camp Kilmer in Edison, N.J.

Jozsef built his American life in Woodbridge, NJ where he further developed his passion for being a barber. He opened a barbershop on Amboy Avenue, spent time with other like-minded Hungarians, and thrived. He was a devout Catholic and was an active parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church. He was also an active member of the Woodbridge Hungarian American Club where he participated in many of Hungarian celebrations and events.

Jozsef’s knack for entrepreneurship and his love of people and community led him to own several ventures in Perth Amboy, NJ including Club Golden and the Budapest Inn. Jozsef would later retire from the Township of Woodbridge as a bus driver for senior citizens, who were always very fond of his accommodating and courteous nature.

Jozsef was a man who loved life and was devoted to others, being a loving son, husband, father, and grandfather. In 1990 his family grew when he was blessed to marry his second wife, Matilda Fruhstuck and became a parent to her two children. They had many happy years together in Woodbridge and moved to Garfield, NJ ten years ago. Matilda was lovingly devoted to Jozsef until his final day, and they celebrated 30 years of marriage this past September.

Jozsef’s passion was photography. He greatly enjoyed taking photos of those he loved and the places and things he admired. He took great pleasure in the simple joy of wandering on a beautiful day and taking photos. He was frequently seen in gardens, near the water, or at the homes of his friends and family, happily taking photos and sharing those that were recently developed.

Jozsef was loving and kind to everyone. He loved life and enjoyed time outdoors. He continued to stay connected to family and friends throughout the years, either traveling back to Hungary and with regular family dinners. He loved to eat. His favorite foods were chicken soup, fried chicken, and all things sweet.

His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he always loved to be a positive presence in their lives, making them a priority. He cherished the love of friends and family and stayed in contact with them throughout the years, always letting them know they were in his thoughts.

Jozsef was preceded in death by his sisters, Anna Avar Deak and Maria Fruhstuck Francsics.

Surviving are his wife, Matilda Fruhstuck; daughter and son-in-law, Violet and Fred Markmann; his daughter, Mary Fruhstuck; ex-wife, Ibolya Fruhstuck; his step-children and their spouses, Zsolt and Krissy Vegh, Adrienne Vegh-Soti and Julius (Freddy) Soti; his grandson and wife, Kyle Markmann and Ashley Baldwin Markmann; his grandson, Ryan Markmann; his granddaughter, Sara Soti; and grandsons, Julius and Levente Soti, André and Aidan Vegh, Connor and Ian Walsh; his nephews, Ernie Francsics and József Deák, nieces, Tinka Imréné Banga, Anikó Lászlóné Banga and their families; numerous extended family and dear friends.

Jozsef will lie in repose on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Magyar Church, 223 Third Street, Passaic, NJ 07055, under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.

A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Rev. Laszlo Balogh will follow the gathering beginning at 11:00 a.m. and to which all are welcome.

Interment will take place at a later date in the family plot in Bozsok, Hungary.

Fájó szívvel értesítjük mindazokat akik ismerték és szerették, hogy Frühstück József, életének 92. évében, 2021. február 18-án, a NJ-ben lévő Passaic-i Szent Mária Kórházban, rövid betegség után örök álomra hajtotta fejét.

1928. március 19-én született, az osztrák határ menti kis Vas megyei faluban, Bozsokon.

Édesanyja, született Német Mária, édesapja Frühstück József volt. Mindössze négy éves volt, mikor édesapját tüdőbajban elveszítette, így később mostohaapja, Ávár Ferenc nevelte.  Bozsokon töltött fiatal éveit, ottani rokonait és barátait soha nem feledte, s élete alkonyán is sokat emlegette.  Hamvai is ott lesznek örök nyugovóra helyezve.

József hosszú, színes élete telve volt jókedvvel, szeretettel és csintalan humorral.  Fiatalon megtanulta a kétkezi munka értékét, mikor tizenévesen saját lovakat véve, gazdálkodni kezdett az osztrák határ menti szántóföldeken. A második világháborúban istállójuk menedékül szolgált üldözött zsidó családoknak.

A háború után vágyott a kalandra és a változatosságra. Amellett, hogy megtanult borbélykodni, beállt cirkuszi segédnek is, majd a katonaságnál szakácsként szolgált.  Később megtanult teherautót vezetni és a fővárosba költözött.  Ott ismerte meg első feleségét, Szél Ibolyát, az ‘56-os forradalom hajnalán.  A szabadságharc leverése után visszaköltözött Bozsokra, s ott hallott egy hozzá hajat vágatni járó határőrtől arról, hogyan lehetne biztonságosan átjutni Ausztriába a kommunista elnyomás elől.  Egy sötét éjszakán kedvesével kutyaugatás és golyósüvítés kíséretében ő is elindult nyugat felé, a jobb jövő reményében.  Dél-Afrika, Ausztrália és Amerika is segítséget nyújtott a menekülteknek.  Ez utóbbi szolgált a lágerben a legvonzóbb segédcsomaggal, így döntött afelől, hogy melyik sorba álljon. Az Egyesült Államokba érvén, a menekülteknek felállított Camp Kilmer táborban vette feleségül menyasszonyát, a NJ-i Edisonban.

Ezt követően a NJ-i Woodbridge-ben alapított családot, melyből két lánya született. Miután megszerezte borbély engedélyét, ott nyitotta meg Amboy Avenue-i műhelyét.  Aktív tagja volt a Woodbridge-i Magyar Klub társasági életetének, hol igazán otthon érezte magát rokonlelkű magyarok körében.  Elhivatott katolikusként járt a Woodbridge-i Our Lady of Mt. Carmel templomba, ahol akkoriban még magyar pap tartotta a miséket.

Vállalkozó szellemű üzletemberként, több befektetésbe is belevágott, s mivel szerette a társaságot, két bárt is vezetett, a Club Golden-t és a Budapest Inn-t Perth Amboy-ban. Woodbridge Township időseket szállító buszsofőrjeként vonult nyugdíjba, ahol nagyon közkedvelt volt utasai körében, előzékenységének és odafigyelő gondoskodásának köszönhetően.

Szerette az életet, mindig ragaszkodott barátaihoz és családjához, mint szerető fiú, férj, apa és nagyapa.  1990-ben vette el második feleségét, Huszti Matildot, s így apja lett az ő két gyermekének is.  Még sokáig Woodbridge-ben éltek, de az utóbbi közel tíz esztendőben a NJ-i Garfield-ben laktak.  Matild hű társa volt Józsefnek, és odaadóan ápolta őt utolsó éveiben is. Szeptemberben ünnepelték 30. házassági évfordulójukat.

Rajongott a fényképezésért.  Szeretett a természetben gyönyörködni és mindenkiben meglátta a szépet.  Élvezettel sétált szép napokon a parkban, vízparton, kertekben, és kattingatta a gépét. Mindenkit meg akart örökíteni egy szép háttér előtt és aztán örömmel kereste fel őket, hogy megajándékozhassa őket az előhívott képeivel.

Kedves volt mindenkihez és imádta a szabad levegőt.  Szerette tartani a kapcsolatot szeretteivel, rendszeresen látogatotta magyaroszági rokonait és örömmel vett részt családi összejöveteleken.  Szerette a közös vacsorákat, kedvenc étele a húsleves volt, melyet orvosságnak hívott, de soha nem vetette meg az édességeket sem.

Gyermekei és unokái voltak legnagyobb büszkeségei, örömmel töltött velük időt, s őket helyezte mindenek fölé.  Rokonait és barátait gyakran hívta telefonon, akár csak egy pár szóra, hogy tudják, gondol rájuk.  Elalvás előtt hosszú volt a nevek listája akikért imádkozott.

A halálban megelőzte őt nővére, Francsics Istvánné Frühstück Mária, és húga Deák Józsefné Ávár Anna.

Gyászolja őt özvegye, Frühstück Matilda; idősebb lánya Ibolya és veje Fred Markmann; fiatalabbik lánya, Frühstück Mária; volt felesége, Frühstück Ibolya; mostohagyermekei és házastársaik, Végh Zsolt és Krissy; valamint Végh-Sóti Adrienn és Fredi; unokája Kyle Markmann és felesége Ashley Baldwin Markmann; unokái Ryan Markmann, Sóti Sára, Gyuszi, Levente, Végh André és Aidan, és Connor és Ian Walsh; unokaöccsei Francsics Ernő, Deák József; unokahúgai Banga Imréné, Tinka; Banga Lászlóné, Anikó és családjaik, valamint számos távolabbi rokon, barát és ismerős.
