Judith Muriel Schopmeier, age 82 years, of Pennington, NJ, died peacefully on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at Capital Health Medical Center-Hopewell.
Born in New York City, NY, July 5, 1938, daughter of the late Joseph and Julia Muriel Connolly Chlanda, Judy was raised in New York City and have lived in Deer Park, NY and Clinton, NJ prior to moving to Delaware fifteen years ago.
A retired registered nurse, Judy did her training at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, and had worked at several facilities over the years, including Suffolk State Developmental Center on Long Island and also with the Family Practice Residency Program at Somerset Medical Center, Somerville, NJ.
Loved by everyone she met, Judy was the quintessential nurse: genuinely caring, full of compassion, nurturing, and a good listener. With an energy that was contagious, she was always positive and unconsciously touched the hearts of many which helped them heal their physical selves.
Family was paramount to Judy; she and her devoted husband, Manfred, were the proud parents of two daughters and a son who happily made them grandparents. Lovingly called ‘Mia” by her grandchildren, Judy and Manfred doted on them at every opportunity. Summers at their beach home in Delaware were the source of some especially fond memories for the family. It was there, whether out on the beach, walking the boardwalk, or gathering in the home she adored, where Judy’s amazing storytelling ability would come into full focus; being a first generation American, most of her family history was oral, and she loved to recount stories of the family history to the next generations who equally enjoyed learning.
Diagnosed five years ago with pancreatic cancer, Judy never once complained or felt sorry for herself. She was always thanking and being appreciative to all those who cared for her. She fought hard to overcome the illness, making sure that her passion for life never got darkened by her diagnosis. In fact, she would always ensure that she said, “Did I tell you I Love You today?” each time she said goodbye to someone, as she truly appreciated them for being in her life.
It is this simple but amazing phrase, “I Love You”, which is her enduring legacy. By living a life of genuine love for one another, the world can and will be the way Judy tried to make it, a place in which we all live happily together, doing God’s work.
Surviving are her husband of fifty-eight years, Manfred Schopmeier, with whom she joined hands in marriage on October 7, 1961; her children and their spouses, Melanie Ann and Robert Putch, Anneliese and Mark Jacobson, and Dirk Schopmeier and his wife, Lucy Medina; her grandchildren, Andrew, Adam, Hannah, and Kyle; a sister and sister-in-law, Sheila Chlanda and Phyllis Zwarych; a brother, Kimberly Chlanda; a niece, Zoe Chlanda; several extended family members; and many friends.
