Louis Maccione, age 96 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully at home on Saturday, April 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on October 23, 1928, in Newton Township, PA, son of the late Anthony and Ada Ayers Maccione. Louis grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania until the age of twelve when he then moved to Millburn, NJ. He lived for many years in New Providence, NJ, and moved to Raritan Township in 1992. He and his late wife, Joan, who died in 2016, also considered themselves, “snowbirds,” spending their winters in Holly Hill, FL.
A hard worker and dedicated family man, Louis worked at Baltusrol Golf Club and was a co-owner of a small gas station before joining the public works department. He will be remembered by many in the Millburn, NJ, area as the knowledgeable and friendly Superintendent of the Millburn Public Works, where he retired from after over 30 years of service.
Louis will also be remembered as a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving as soon as he was age-eligible from 1946-1948, when he was honorably discharged. Some of his service was on the northern border of Italy, where he did guard duty and was part of the jeep brigade.
Marrying his “better-half”, Joan Smith Maccione, on November 2, 1957, in Springfield, NJ, the couple had one daughter, Diane, who was their pride and joy and ensured her parents were always well taken care of as they lived with her until their passings.
Louis was called to anything outdoors, being on the beach among his favorite places. Daytona Beach, FL, was a place he and the family enjoyed immensely, riding the skyride and motorbikes, and simply spending time together making memories.
He loved to take care of the lawn, and his neighbors all knew it was springtime when they would see Louis riding the tractor, pruning the hedges and planting flowers. A jack of all trades, he enjoyed working on and fixing-up cars, a hobby he spent time doing with his son-in-law, Michael, who also got the “car gene”.
Louis’s saying of, “Just Keep Moving!” will be always echoed in the wonderful stories that will be continued to be shared about this truly remarkable soul. Though he will be missed, his love of family, his dedication to his country, and his listening ear will guide so many future generations for the better.
In addition to his parents and wife, Louis was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Maccione, Joseph Maccione and Romayne D’Ecclessis
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Michael Wehrle; his two grandchildren, Heather and husband, Matthew Shumate, and Michael L. Wehrle; his great grandson, Sebastian Shumate; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family, and many dear friends.
Family and friends will gather on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ, to help celebrate the life of this most special man.
Military honors followed by a life celebration service will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home, and to which all are welcome.
