So many somewhat silly memories come back to me as if they are holding hands with one another and pulling each other along. Madelyn would certainly laugh at this conceit and demand that I explain myself. So, for Mad’s sake, here’s how it is: I think of Amwell Road; I think of spiked punch and all-you-can-eat munchies as bait for attendance at a LWV program planning meeting (her idea); I think of things that came too late to us like a mouton coat and rabbit fur mittens; I think of marveling together over the antagonism of her cats in Trenton; I think of Planned Unit Developments and Master Plans; I think of how The Rutgers University Planning Department originally reject her as a student (too old and just a housewife); I think of watching “The Candidate” in 1974 for tips and tricks we totally understood; I think of worries over our kids that happily proved pointless; and. to sum up, I think of laughing together with Doreen Simko over the two of them locked in a mall department store. There’s so much more like Oaxaca, and What Cheer, and driving her VW bus over the see-thru-roadway bridge while Mad sat with eyes squeezed shut in the passenger seat. It was all good. I was fortunate to know her, my smart, undaunted friend, Madelyn.
