Maryann Flood, age 85 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully on Monday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ, under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Born at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in the Bronx, NY, on November 12, 1938, daughter of the late James and Anna Lang Camenos, Maryann was raised in a five-story walk-up in the Washington Heights section of the Bronx, and had formerly lived in Palisades Park and Westwood, NJ, prior to moving to the Maple Glen section of Flemington, NJ, in 1978. She lived there for many years until moving to Flemington Fields several years ago where she enjoyed spending time with her neighbors and community.
For many years Maryann was a Sales Contractor for Western Electric based out of New York City, where her business acumen and people skills made her well-respected among her colleagues and customers. Many in the greater Flemington area though, will remember Maryann as the consummate professional and story-teller with a smile at Staples, where she became known as, “The Staples Lady” and worked for many years before officially retiring for yet another time.
Meeting her future husband, Thomas, in Spring Lake, NJ, while on a family vacation, the sparks were instantaneous and the couple would join hands in holy matrimony on September 19, 1970. Their union would bring them two daughters, Jeannine and Meghan, who were the light of their mother’s eyes, especially when Jeannine brought Mark into the family, and even more so when both of her girls elevated her to the title of “Mimi” six times over.
Family was everything to Maryann and though she could be strong-willed, everything she did was rooted in what was best for her family and what would make them smile the most. There was simply nothing she would not do for them, or for anyone actually. She truly would give a stranger the proverbial “shirt off her back” and the word “no” was not in her vocabulary. All she ever wanted to do was help those in need by using whatever gifts she had been given by God.
A devout Catholic raised in an Irish-Catholic New York City neighborhood, she was a longtime and faithful communicant of St. Magdalen Church, Flemington, NJ. Her faith was so strong that even during her final illness, she still pushed to go to Mass each Wednesday at Noon, where she would pray for everyone else first before herself. She was always known to tell anyone who would listen that God was constantly working in her life, and she meditated often to understand how she could help others through and with her faith.
Community was vitally important to Maryann and the neighborhoods of Maple Glen and Flemington Fields, the parish family of St. Magdalen’s, and her work at Staples are but four examples of how the community became her family. The other major “community” in her world, was the Flemington Community Pool where she was a Board Member for many years and was instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation and more importantly, that fun was found at the pool for all who came through the gates.
In addition to her community service, Maryann had many hobbies which included playing cards with her close-knit group of friends, drinking Chardonnay, eating chocolate, knitting and embroidering, and cooking lasagna to name a few.
In Philippians 4:8-9 it is written: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Maryann lived each day of her life putting these words into action. To honor her, is to try and live each of our days helping others and putting good into a world that truly needs more acts of kindness and of love. Though she will be sorely missed, her legacy will live on each time a kind word is uttered and a smile is shown to a stranger.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Thomas who died in 2007, Maryann was preceded in death by her brother, James Camenos, Jr., and her brother-in-Law, Edward Flood.
Surviving are her beloved daughters and son-in-law, Jeannine and Mark Moschberger and Meghan Morris; her cherished grandchildren, Morgan, Katelyn and Allison Moschberger, Romus E. “Trey” Morris III, and Maxine and Amelia Morris; her sister-in-law, Mary Flood; several extended family members; and many dear friends.
Maryann will lie in repose on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ. A catholic vigil service will take place at 7:30 p.m., followed by reflections from family and friends. All are invited to bring heartfelt memories to share. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ. Everyone is kindly asked to meet directly at the church on Wednesday morning beginning at 9:45 a.m. and to follow the instructions of the Wright & Ford Care Team Family Ambassadors upon arrival.
Entombment with her adored husband will follow at St. Magdalen Mausoleum, North Main Street, Flemington, NJ, and all are welcome.
