Patrick Paul “Pat” Ryan, age 64 years, of Readington Township, NJ, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, with his loving wife, Patricia by his side.

Born in Nuremberg, Germany, November 30, 1955, where his father was serving with the United States Military, Pat had formerly lived in Newark, NJ, Ashland, WI, Stevens Point, WI, Bancroft, WI, Poway, CA, and Naperville, IL.

With a passion for the environment and a global view of the world, he had a professional passion for change management and was the Executive Director for the Power & Energy Society of IEEE, Inc., as well as served on the Readington Township Board of Adjustment.

Pat had a unique sense of humor, and with his panache for making friends and cultivating relationships, one of the main focus in his life, along with his cherished wife, was to raise his three children with strong values. He was so proud to watch them each become positive, contributing citizens of the community at large.

He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and anything involving the great outdoors.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia J. Hunkele Ryan; his children, Roman Ryan, Nicholas Ryan, and Bridget Ryan; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Les Kiss; several extended family members; and many dear friends.

Remember the good times with you in Bogota Colombia for a conference, rest in peace "amigo".

Pat was a terrific friend within IEEE. It was always a pleasure to see him at any gathering.

Pat was a very good friend and supported IEEE PES in Latin America and we had the chance to meet several times in different places of the World. We all will miss Pat and will reserve a place in our hearts for him.

Pat was a good man, taken too soon. May he rest in peace. Condolences to his wife, Pat, and three children who he loved and talked about all the time. They are his legacy.

Patty and family: I am so sorry for your loss. In the short time I knew Pat it was easy to tell he was empathetic, a great listener and a generous person; always making himself available both professional and personally. He was a great boss. I wish I had the opportunity to know him better, but am glad I got a chance know him.

A great director: all of us will miss him

I am saddened and so sorry for the loss of a leader. My condolences to the family.

I had the good fortune to meet Pat a few years ago at one of the IEEE Technical Committee Meetings. Pat made me feel so welcomed. He genuinely listened to us, cared about the challenges that we faced working on standards, and wanted to help make things better. My sincerest condolences and prayers to his family and friends.

The news of Pat Paul Ryan's death came to us in PES Nigeria Chapter like a thunder from the blues. It was such an unexpected news especially when the efforts of this great networker in PES is bearing much needed fruits. We however take solace that he has left an indelible mark not only in PES and the IEEE worldwide. As Executive Director of PES, Pat introduced so many changes that brought out the best in volunteering and participation in the society activities by Chapters globally - always with a CAN DO attitude. Adieu Patrick Paul Ryan. Rest peacefully. Your memory will surely linger on.

Condolences to the family on the demise of Pat. Truly a humble man, having had the opportunity to meet him in Malaysia during the Power and Energy Society (PES) events. Always willing to support activities of the society. May his soul rest in peace.

Few people enter our lives and leave a lasting impression. Pat was one of those people . From the moment we met Pat , he treated us like he knew us forever. His smile was infectious. He made you feel like an “old shoe” …Comfortable and an good fit. We will miss him in our lives.

I was privileged to know Pat through the IEEE. His passion for improving the world around him and ability to get things done were a blessing to all who knew Pat. Rest in peace.

I knew his name for many years but only in the past 24 months as part of Society Governing Board, Executive Committee, Finance Committee I had the opportunity to work with Pat. He made me feel neither I am new to him nor my problem as PES VP Publications was. He was always smiling, listening and supportive to me and all. He never gave me an impression that he was working for PES , rather he was always serving a society in excess of 40000 PES members as well IEEE. More I write , more I feel , I am short off . A great PES officer and a gentleman- we shall miss you Pat. Rest in Peace.

I am devastated to lose a friend and a colleague who has made huge contributions to IEEE. We should cherish accomplishments Pat has made, as it is not incidental that major growth of IEEE PES coincides with having Pat as Executive Director. He always had a clear vision on how best to engage volunteers and emphasized importance of significant participation and leadership of volunteers in any activity. Pat proactively help create a culture of strong teamwork between volunteers and staff that help made IEEE PES so successful. He was instrumental in building bridges with other societies and organizations and provided leadership for the whole IEEE, earning him a prestigious IEEE Herz award. When I became IEEE PES, I was grateful to Pat for guiding me to do my role better and appreciated his openness that helped us reach common conclusions. IEEE was his passion and his dedication to his staff and our volunteers was unparalleled. He was a unique individual, with a deep understanding of IEEE organization and how to make it better, who I learnt a lot from. Pat understood both business and technical aspects that helped leading IEEE PES to new heights. I have been privileged to call Pat a friend and we shared lots of great memories. We had opportunities, together with other IEEE colleagues, to visit different places around the globe and engage volunteers. We always had lots of fun and were proud of our accomplishments. I will miss him a lot.

I didn’t know Pat for long, I worked for him since Jan. ’18, but in this short time he was very influential, helping me improve as an employee and a person. He was always very giving both professionally, having built a great PES team, and personally; inviting us to his home, offering to take my son hunting. His generosity, his personality, and his presence will be missed. My condolences to his family.

All the years in IEEE PES we met at many different locations around the world and it was always a great joy for me to see Pat and Patricia his wife. Pat and I had a common, Pat was born in Nürnberg, Germany and I'm living there. He planned to come to Nürnberg to look for his roots. Pat and Patrica there are many nice memories in my mind. I am glad to have met Pat and have him as a friend. He was one of the few that traveled as much as I did. We traded many international horror stories.I had many laughs with Pat during our regular poker games. He liked the onion dip! This was the last one he attended at my house on Feb 28. We desperately tried to come up with a way of playing the game via video but nothing worked. I will miss him. My condolences Pat, Roman, Nicholas and Bridget.
