Rita Laws (Fuguet) Coale died peacefully on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Rolling Hills Care Center, Clinton Township, NJ, just shy of her 95th birthday.
She lived most of her adult life in Maryland, moving to New Jersey after her second husband’s death over 15 years ago.
Daughter of William Knocke Laws and Rita Fuguet, she grew up in Bethesda, MD. She graduated from Vassar College in 1946 with BA in Mathematics, married and was caretaker to her younger brothers and sister orphaned shortly after.
She obtained a master’s in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University and taught math and occasionally science for grades 7 through 12 in the Maryland public school system for 31 years and for several years at the Harford Day School. She loved teaching and was very devoted to her students. In retirement she tutored and engaged in field work for the office on aging, assisting elderly and rural folks in navigating the healthcare system, and filing tax returns.
Rita loved her home near the Susquehanna River and spent many happy hours gardening and propagating shrubs and flowers. For years she maintained a vegetable garden large enough to provide for rabbits as well as humans.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her son, Eric Kleinspehn; her siblings, William Laws, Howard Laws and Jane Laws Rodenberg; her second husband, Daniel Edgar Coale; and her son-in-law, Eric Marks.
Surviving are her daughter, Valerie Marks; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family; and the many students she taught over the years who carry her light forward in the world.
Arrangements will be announced under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
