Robert Thomas Guindon, age 68 years, of Lebanon Borough, NJ, died suddenly on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at his home.
Born in Hoboken NJ, December 8, 1951, son of the late Robert E. and Doris McGowan Guindon, Robert was raised in Union City and Warren, NJ, raised his own family in Clinton Township, NJ, and moved to Lebanon Borough last summer.
A graduate of Dunellen High School, Robert attended the University of Vermont concentrating in mathematics. After a stint at International Paper, Robert moved to contract work, primarily in the telecom industry. Over the course of a long career, he worked at AT & T and many of their subsidiaries in project planning and management and vendor relationship management.
Robert grew up in a loving home, the second child and oldest boy in a family of 5 children. He met his wife, the former Kathleen Meaney of Plainfield, NJ, at the Seacomber Motel in Lincroft, NJ, in the summer of 1972. They were part of a group being housed at the motel by the Prudential Insurance Company while training to take jobs at the company’s new office in Edison, NJ. Robert and Kay would marry the following year on May 12, 1973, in Kirkpatrick Chapel at Rutgers University.
In 1976, the couple welcomed their first son, Matthew; their second son, Tyler, followed in 1983. As his children grew, Robert was very involved in all of their activities and never missed a game or event. He was a coach for both boys’ North Hunterdon Little League teams and a Boy Scout leader.
As his boys found their life partners, Robert would soon find himself holding a new title, that of “PopPop” to his grandson, Lucien. He and Lucien were the best of friends, and together they enjoyed hours making up boisterous and ever-evolving games with Paw Patrol plush animals and acting out costume adventures – reminiscent of play times with his own young sons. “PopPop, do you want to play with the pups?” was a frequent invitation from Lucien, and PopPop never said no.
Robert’s family will forever remember him as being the ultimate supporter- always there to answer a question or lend a hand. He was willing to take on any work project and commute any distance in the course of his employment to ensure that he could provide a secure and comfortable home for his family. His selflessness knew no bounds. He was generous with both his time and talent and loved to just chat and listen to a person’s story. He was a very engaged listener, and friends, family, and coworkers welcomed his heartfelt words and advice.
His altruistic side is also a large part of his legacy as Robert would be the first to volunteer to help others, no matter the situation or the time. Robert and Kay together delivered meals to county residents for Meals on Wheels in Hunterdon, helping those people who need the basics to survive. He knew his clients by name and always had a smile and a friendly word for everyone on his route.
An avid sports fan, Robert loved to play golf and was a devoted New York Yankee and New York Giants supporter. He and Kay also loved to travel and created many happy memories on beach vacations in Aruba and on cruises to the Baltic, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. The place they were happiest, though, was at the Jersey shore, enjoying the beach and the ocean with their family or alone with each other.
Though his sudden passing leaves a void, his legacy of selflessness, caring, and love for family and friends will live on through all who knew him. The world is better for Robert having passed through it, and his light will shine through the eyes of all whom he touched.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Kathleen Meaney Guindon; his sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew Douglas and Carrie Guindon and Robert Tyler and Karen Guindon; his grandson, Lucien Adam Guindon; his siblings, Kathleen and Henry Escaravage, Anne and Andrew Hutton, Richard and Melanie Guindon, Kenneth and Beverly Guindon; five nieces and five nephews; and many dear friends and extended family members.
