Ruth Lowenstein of Fort Lee, NJ, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, at the remarkable age of 102. Born on November 2, 1921, in Reckendorf, Germany, Ruth’s early life was marked by profound courage and resilience. On November 1, 1938, at the age of 16, Ruth fled Nazi Germany, boarding the SS Washington in Hamburg alone for a ten-day journey to New York City. Upon arrival, Ruth began a new life that shaped her enduring strength and spirit. Tragically, her parents, Joseph and Freida Schmidt, and her younger brother, Ludwig, were unable to escape Germany and perished in the Holocaust.
A few short years later, Ruth met and married the love of her life, Julius Lowenstein. Together, they built a loving family and shared sixty-two precious years together. Ruth was a devoted mother to her two daughters, Marilyn Blumenthal (deceased) and Vivian Daniel, and their spouses, Stephen Blumenthal (deceased) and Fred Daniel. Most of all, Ruth loved spending time with her five grandchildren: Suzi Bartkunsky (deceased), Michael Blumenthal, David Blumenthal, Deborah Tracy, and Jonny Daniel, their spouses, as well as her fourteen great-grandchildren. Ruth was a beacon of love and support to her family, filled with kindness and a resilient spirit.
Ruth was known for her generous and optimistic nature, always seeing the best in people and situations. She adored her weekends, vacations, and holidays with family, enjoyed social time with friends, and relished playing her favorite card game, canasta, twice a week up until her passing. Her enthusiasm for life and her positive outlook were an inspiration to all who knew her, and her legacy will continue through her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who cherished their time with her.
Her life was a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Ruth will be deeply missed, and her memory will forever be a blessing and cherished in the hearts of her family, friends and all who have known her.
