Verlie Ives Necy Williams, age 82 years, of New Amsterdam, Berbice, Guyana, died peacefully surrounded by the light and love of her family on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born September 10, 1937 in Berbice, Guyana, daughter of the late Bozzet Grant and Muriel Williams Grant, Sister Verlie, as she was affectionally known in her hometown, lived her entire life in Guyana, traveling back and forth to spend time with her daughters here in the United States.
She was a well respected chef, working for doctors, public entities and the High Court of New Amsterdam. She was known for many famous dishes including her curry, “pepper pot”, and fried rice. Food was an art for Sister Verlie, and also a way to bring people together which always made her smile. Her daughters, Joan and Karin, fondly recall that as children their mother would always make extra food “just in case” a guest would stop by; no one ever left their home hungry! Even when visiting her daughters, she would always cook for their friends and in fact, anyone who would stop over. From the mailman to the plumber, everyone was well fed.
A devout catholic and longtime communicant of Church of the Assumption in Guyana, Sister Verlie will be forever remembered for her loving and compassionate heart. She also taught kindergarten in Guyana as well as knitting and crocheting classes. Simply put, Sister Verlie greatly enjoyed giving back to the community in whatever way she was able.
Though the last several months were trying, she never lost sight of her faith and the hope in the brightest of tomorrows. As her eyes opened this morning in heaven, no doubt she heard the words of 2 Timothy 4:7-8: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Winifred Williams.
Surviving are her two daughters and son-in-law, Joan P. Williams and Karin A. and Daniel Pascal; her granddaughter, Tremaine Bollers; her sister, Muriel Smith; and many extended family and friends both in Guyana and in the United States.
Committal prayers followed by cremation will be private at the Chapel of Ewing Crematory, Ewing Township, NJ under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ 08822.
A Mass of Christian Burial held at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ 08822 will be announced in the upcoming week.
