Robert Joseph Kuran, age 80 years, of Delaware Township, NJ, died on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at home, surrounded by his loving family and under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Born in South Amboy, NJ, December 28, 1937, son of the late Joseph and Sally Kurzawa Kuran, he had resided in Delaware Township for many years.
Family was important to Bob. He had fond memories of growing up in New Jersey with his brother Ron, playing cowboys and indians in the woods around their house.
His love of horses and the outdoors led him to pursue a degree in Animal Husbandry at Texas Christian University. Bob went on to work on a ranch in South Dakota for three years which only deepened his love of the cowboy life.
Bob was a hard worker from the time he was young, learning by example from his parents. He and his brother helped to build the family home, delivered eggs by bicycle, raised minks and tended a large family garden.
As a child he also learned the importance of serving his community as a Boy Scout, altar boy and athlete. Bob served many years as a school board member for both the Sayreville School District and Hunterdon Central School District. He was an avid supporter of the football team at Hunterdon Central.
Bob loved telling stories to his grandchildren about his youth, his family and his adventures on the ranch. He always told them that “Life is simple when you plow around the stump.” He taught them about the importance of education, following your passion and being a good friend and neighbor.
After retiring as a chemical operator from E.I. Dupont, Parlin, NJ, he went on to work for Wells Fargo as a security guard at New York Life in Lebanon, NJ.
He loved riding his tractor, planting trees and caring for the many animals he kept over the years on his “farm.”
Bob enjoyed meeting his friends at the General Store in Sergeantsville for coffee and long talks.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Lana Scully Kuran; his daughter and son-in law, Jacqueline and Robert Chicchi of Boiling Springs, PA; and his son and daughter-in-law Timothy and Melissa Kuran of Mooresville, NC; his grandchildren, Megan, Claire, Brennan, Meaghan, and Jack; and many dear friends.
