Agnes H. “Dixie” Gabovics Scholink, age 95 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her family under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Born in Garfield, NJ, August 20, 1922, daughter of the late Thomas and Julia Hertel Gabovics, Dixie had formerly resided in Sandbrook, NJ, New York City, NY and Ringoes, NJ prior to moving to Raritan Township in 1962.
Her family came to Hunterdon County in 1928 and she was a 1940 graduate of Flemington High School, Flemington, NJ where she was an active part of the FHS Class of 1940 Alumni Committee. She worked for several years as an administrative secretary at the Neuro-Psychiatric Institute in Princeton, NJ as well as for Oliver Rubber, Flemington, NJ.
During World War II, Dixie worked in Maxon’s Defense Plant on 34th Street in New York City, NY, helping to protect our country.
Dixie was a quintessential “farm-girl” and “city-girl” all meshed up into one package which contained nothing but genuine caring and love for all those in her life. She will forever be remembered as that loving and caring daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend to all during her ninety-five years on this Earth.
An avid cook and baker, there were not many things Dixie was not able to create. She was extremely savvy in many things; from running a house to running a business, not much got past her intuitive and smart brain. She loved to entertain, and was well known for her dancing. Reading, gardening and traveling were also some favorite pastimes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Scholink, Sr. The two were married on November 19, 1962 and had a marriage of inspiration to so many; her love for him never faded since his death on October 19, 2015.
One of six children, she was also predeceased by all of her siblings, Mary Clare Harmon, Adele Keppler, and Thomas, Joseph and Stephen Gabovics.
She leaves to carry on her legacy her devoted son, Robert C. Scholink, Jr. of Ewing, NJ; her nieces and nephews, Marie C. Billett, Ann and her husband, Jim Perner, Mark and his wife, Sandy Gabavics, Tom and his wife, Diane Gabavics and Mary Eva and her husband, Larry Johnson; her caregiver of the past several years, Irma Dvalishvili; and several extended family members and friends.
Funeral services officiated by Rev. Walter Wilktorek will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
