Albert F. Wermuth, Jr., M.D., age 86 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully at home on Friday, March 10, 2023, with his loving wife, Muriel at his side, and under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Born on May 30, 1936, in Glen Ridge, NJ, son of the late Albert F. Wermuth, Sr. and Edwina DeCamp Wermuth, Al was raised in Caldwell, NJ, and had lived in Hunterdon County since the early 1970’s.
Graduating from Washington State University, Pullman, WA, with a degree in Zoology, Al would join the United States Air Force in 1956, and serve as a Nuclear Weapons Mechanic Specialist until his honorable discharge in 1960. He would then go on to earn his M.D. from Washington University, St. Louis, MO, in 1966.
After graduation from medical school, Al would return to his New Jersey roots when he was accepted into the Family Medicine Residency Program at Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington, NJ.
Moving his young family to the hill behind the hospital, Al jumped into the program and his new role head first not just as a physician, but as a member of the community. Opening an initial family medicine practice with Dr. Frank Snope, Al would later be joined by Dr. Richard Lunger and the pair would then open Riverfield Family Medicine in Clinton several years later where he would practice until retirement.
With a truly loving persona, Dr. Wermuth only wanted the best for his patients from both a physiological and psychological standpoint. Simply put, he put the “Family” in Family Medicine.
Working in Hunterdon County almost his entire career, Al was the North Hunterdon High School physician for many years, attending almost every sporting event and high school activity to both show his support for the students and to provide immediate medical care when needed.
For the Hunterdon Healthcare system as a whole, Al helped to expand the family residency program and recruit many of its future graduates. He was paramount in helping to create new systems for patient care and advance the technological offerings of the system; many nights were spent at board meetings helping the hospital grow and expand to meet and exceed the needs of the community. Additionally, he taught at Rutgers Medical School, helping to teach the next generations about the importance of listening to ones patient and looking at their health from multiple perspectives.
It was one faithful day at Hunterdon Medical Center when Al would meet a nurse, Muriel, who would change his life for the better. The two would find friendship, companionship, and genuine love in one another, and join hands in holy matrimony on July 5, 1991 at the Red Line Inn, Stockbridge, MA.
Family was very important to Al, and his children, grandchildren and his great grandson were his pride and joy. He was known to be tough but fair, and always pushed his children to follow their dreams. He simply wanted everyone to be happy and to be the best version of themselves always; no excuses!
Al enjoyed traveling, and he and Muriel traveled the world; from California to Italy, they had many enjoyable trips making special memories wherever they went. One of his favorite places though, was his lake house in Otis, MA which was his version of “Walden Pond”, a place where he could truly unplug from life and find himself.
A man of profound faith, Al was a longtime member of the Flemington Baptist Church, Flemington, NJ.
Al would want all of you reading this to not be saddened by his death, but rather to focus on all the good that still is present in the world. To ensure that you are able to focus, here is Al’s final prescription for each person reading this: Love one another. Be joyful. Smile. Always seek happiness. Be the friend that you want to have. Be understanding. Have and make peace. Forgive. Give of yourself. Take Daily, Unlimited Refills.
Surviving are his loving wife, Muriel J. Searfoss Wermuth; his daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Mark Humphrey, Margaret and Mark Saharic, Amy and Tom Graham, and Holly and Mark Marciniak; his grandchildren, Shawn Humphrey, Justin Humphrey, Melissa Saharic, Mark Saharic, and his wife, Megan, Gracelyn Marciniak, and Jocelyn Marciniak; his great grandson, Mark, who is lovingly referred to as, “Little Al”; his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Susie Wermuth; his sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and George Norton; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family; his many patients that over the years became like family; and many dear friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Hunterdon Healthcare for their love and support of Al and the entire family over the years.
