Barrie Iselin Eberstein, age 71 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully at home on Friday, April 15, 2022, under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Born on December 9, 1950, in Somerville, NJ, son of the late Daniel and Ann Davidoff Eberstein, Barrie grew up in the Flemington Junction area of Hunterdon County and was a lifelong area resident.
Graduating in 1969 from Hunterdon Central Regional High School, Flemington, NJ, Barrie would continue his education and earn a BA from Gettysburg College in 1973. This would be followed by his attainment of an MBA from Rutgers in 1983. Employed by Lucent Technologies, New Providence, NJ, for many years as a Senior Business Development Manager, Barrie retired after a long and storied career.
With a sense of humor that could make anyone laugh, Barrie was known to advocate for working hard and to save for a rainy day. Simple and pragmatic, his personality was grounded in his appreciation for family, friends, and the ‘good’ of the world.
Meeting Ms. Carolyn Marie Eble in high school, the two were plutonic friends, nothing more; graduation came and like many, they went their separate ways into the great big world that lay beyond the walls of Hunterdon Central and bucolic Flemington, NJ. It wasn’t until a few years after high school, they bumped into one another at a Halloween party. Maybe it was Barrie’s ‘Superman’ costume, but they rekindled their friendship and this time, there was a new fire in each of their hearts for the other; this time, something was just different. Realizing that they were just good for one another, the couple would join hands in marriage on August 6, 1977, at Copper Hill Country Club and would enjoy forty-five years of an amazing and fun relationship.
The couple would be blessed with three children-Daniel, Mark, and Kristin-all who fondly recall their dad always being there as a rock of support, with an ear that would listen and a heart full of sage advice when warranted. Each felt that Barrie set them up with practical skills needed for the world, but also instilled in them through sports and other spirit testing endeavors, a way to always push themselves hard to achieve their dreams. This is the same advice he would pass on to the next generation, and his eight grandchildren will all live fuller lives because of their Poppie’s wisdom.
With many hobbies, Barrie will be remembered by his children for always being there at all their events, from wrestling tournaments across the country to throwing buckets of baseballs in the backyard. His cheesy smile as he drank a cold beer after meticulously moving the lawn, or the smile while watching his New York Yankees and New York Giants win, is the same smile that is seen on his grandchildren’s faces. He enjoyed crosswords puzzles and would read the Star Ledger daily, keeping up on all the news from around the world as well as local items.
Though Barrie’s physical life ended earlier than anyone would have thought, what will not cease is the compassion and passion for living life which he passed on to the next generations. His spirit will continue to illuminate the path of life for all those who Barrie loved and was honored to call a friend.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Marie Eberstein; his children and their spouses, Daniel and Jennifer Eberstein, Mark and Heather Eberstein, and Kristin and Richard Shafer; his eight grandchildren, Caroline, Alexander, Caleb, Richard, Annabelle, John, Christine, and Brody; his siblings, Conrad and Jacqueline, Elizabeth and Will, and Kim and Catherine; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Albert and Kim, Cortland, and Christopher and Isabelle; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family; and many dear friends.
