Doris E. Hewitt Culberson, age 92 years, of Delaware Township, NJ, returned peacefully to the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, April 9, 2023, at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born at home in Sergeantsville, NJ, daughter of the late Asa and Bessie Ivy Kerr Hewitt, Doris was a lifelong area resident.
The seventh of nine children, Doris grew up on her family’s saw mill on Hewitt Road in Delaware Township. Her childhood taught her the value of hard work as well as faith and the value of family supporting one another in all endeavors.
Meeting her future husband Herbert Culberson when she was age fifteen and he eighteen, she quickly gained a second family in the Culberson family. She would move in with the Culberson’s while Herbert was serving in the United States Army during World War II and quickly learned the inner workings of a true Hunterdon County farm. Over the years, in addition to working on the family farm, Doris worked in the cafeteria at Delaware Township School as well as served as a caretaker on the Dilts Farm.
Doris was a loving soul who made friends easily and loved her family more than anything else. She enjoyed yard sales and antique glassware, and she was a fervent supporter of the United States and its Veterans. Bird watching and enjoying the beauty of Delaware Township was also one of her favorite pastimes.
With a strong Christian faith, Doris was proud to tell everyone that she not only said her prayers every night, but every morning as well! She truly followed Christ’s call to help all people, and she would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need even if it meant she went without; selflessness and compassion were at the core of her soul.
Though recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Doris’s triumphant spirit never faded and she showed her faith and love until she closed her eyes for the final time on Earth and received her reward that is heard in 2 Timothy 4:7-8: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert M. Culberson in 2008; a son, Kenneth L. Culberson in 2014; and her siblings, Vernon Hewitt, Jonathan Hewitt, Charles Hewitt, Elva Smith, Elsie Sheerer, and Helen Piell.
Surviving are her children, Dennis and Peggy Culberson, and Donna and John Todd; her sisters, E. Shirley Kiskurno and Ruth Schneider; her grandchildren, Gregory and his wife, Debbie Culberson, Heather and her husband, Ross Coderoni, Timothy Todd and his longtime partner, Jenna Organetti, and Stephen and his wife, Victoria Culberson; her great grandchildren, McKenzie O’Donnell, Madilyn O’Donnell, Ashley Culberson, Benjamin Culberson, and Carissa Coderoni; several extended family members; and many dear friends.
