Doris Marie (Binseel) Krug, age 94 years, of Branchburg Township, NJ, returned peacefully to the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Palm Sunday, April 2, 2023, at home, surrounded by her loving and devoted family.
Born in Queens, NY, April 28, 1928, daughter of the late John Joseph and Edna Wilhelmina Kirstein Binseel, Doris had lived many places throughout New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania over the years as her husband’s work moved often, and had lived in Branchburg, NJ, with her daughter and son-in-law for the past three years.
Raised in Yonkers, NY, she was a 1946 graduate of Gorton High School, and it was during her high school years where the direction of her future life would take a dramatic turn for the better, as it was when she met and fell in love with her future husband, Maynard Webster Krug.
Growing up in a loving home provided Doris with the ability to find herself and know who she truly was from an early age. Meeting Maynard when she was fourteen and he fifteen, her mother’s approval to allow the two to go on a date resulted in a deep and unabashed love, grounded in respect, faith, and hope. Marrying on July 4, 1949, they were best friends as well as husband and wife throughout their physical time on Earth.
Their union would make a mother of Doris three times over, with Robert, Charles, and Merideth providing a source of joy and inspiration, as well as a heart palpitation or two, over the years. Dedicated and devoted are two simple but powerful words that describe her genuine and compassionate motherly nature. Doris wanted each of her children to come to realize their full potential and to never stop following their dreams; to say she had their back at every turn and was their biggest cheerleader would be a severe understatement.
With Maynard working for the railroad as a civil engineer, the family moved often and early on it was simpler for Doris to stay at home with the children. However, as they got older, she took a job in their school district so she could have a better handle on what each of them was doing; she knew every teacher, coach, and the nuances of what was going on at school which in turn, allowed her to understand and adapt as a mother to help each of them succeed. She began as a cashier in the school cafeteria, and in true Doris-style of hard work, tenacity, and grace, she worked her way up the ranks and would eventually retire as a Purchasing Agent for the Tredyffrin-Eastown School District, Berwyn, PA.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were also the recipient of the compassionate and driven heart that their parents knew well in Doris. With a family cottage on Dyken Pond in Berlin, NY, the entire family made many happy memories over the years and “Mema” was at the root of many life lessons. She loved her whiskey-sours on the front lawn, floating in the lake with everyone on innertubes, bike riding the countryside, and blueberry picking. Never flashy or overbearing, she practiced humility in her teachings, but the lessons learned touched all areas of existence.
Upon retirement, Doris and Maynard enjoyed many weekend excursions and their exploration knew no boundaries. They would often hunt for the hotel with the indoor pool so that no matter what the weather, they could enjoy a nice swim. The rest of their time was spent enjoying each other and of course traveling to spend time with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They were known as the hosts of any party, and still entertained as often as they were able; they will be forever remembered as the life of the party by all who bore witness.
Over the years Doris kept involved with many activities usually involving helping the community and staying healthy; from the Berwyn United Methodist Church to the YMCA and Silver Sneaker’s, Doris always kept very active as she practiced what she preached to her family: putting good out into the world for no other reason than you should, is a good thing!
Martin Luther once wrote, “Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone but in every leaf of springtime.” Though there is sadness in Doris’s death, she would also want us all to remember the words of the poet Pablo Neruda who wrote, “You can cut all the flowers, but you cannot keep spring from coming.” In this Easter season, Doris has been given the fulfillment of the promise given to all of God’s children. She lived her life with a daily motto and fervent prayer to “try” to do good and not only did she try, but she succeeded. With a straightforward and honest approach to life, Doris’s graciousness, tenderness, and love will live on through the hearts and actions of all who were touched by her in one way or another.
In addition to her parents and husband, Maynard W. Krug, who died in 2016, Doris was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Carl Robert Mueller in 2000, and a brother, John E. Binseel in 2018.
Surviving are her two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert M. and Amy Krug and Charles C. and Kimberly Krug; her daughter and son-in-law, Merideth Mueller-Bolton and Michael Bolton; her five grandchildren and their spouses, Edwin M. and Rachel Krug, Carrie and John Nedick, Deborah and Vikas Krugipudi, Aliza and Brian Breerwood, and Emily Krug and Ryan Patterson; seven great grand-children: Preston, Liora, Talia, Luke, Alyssa, Blaise, and Johannes; many extended family members; and many dear friends.
