Dorothy Frances “Dot” Haggerty, age 88 years, of Haverford, PA, died peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Brighton, MA, June 18, 1932, daughter of the late William and Elizabeth McGrail. She was raised in Winchester, MA with siblings Bill, Bob, Lillian, Tom and Phil and graduated Winchester High where she met her husband to be – Jack Haggerty. During his stint in the Marine Corps they lived in California but settled back the East Coast to raise their four kids, ending up in Fanwood NJ, where they lived for 30 years.
After raising her kids she started a professional career as the Assistant to the President of BOC Airco in Murray Hill, NJ for many years before retiring. Upon retirement, she settled in Toms River NJ where she lived for 15 years.
Dot was a devoted wife, caring and attentive grandmother and friend to many but also an active traveler; editor of her local paper and activist letter writer fighting many injustices. She traveled the world with her husband Jack, and later in life with her sister, Lillian, visiting from Alaska to Ireland, from St. Martin to France.
Though the last several years were difficult with Dot suffering from Alzheimer’s. The family would like to thank the many people who assisted with Dot’s care during this time, especially her daughter, Patty, who was her mother’s fiercest advocate and by her side at all times.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Haggerty Sr. in 1995; and three siblings, William in 2003, Thomas in 2015, and Lillian in 2017.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Claire Haggerty, David and Diane Haggerty, and Kevin and Mary Jo Haggerty; a daughter and her partner, Patty Plousis and Kerry Welch; her ten grandchildren, Patrick, Betty, Tim, Luke, Michael, Lauren, Caitlin, Megan, Mark and Julia; two great grandchildren Quincy and Oscar, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Caroline McGrail and Philip and Linda McGrail; many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many dear friends.
Given the current pandemic, a public life celebration service will be scheduled at a later date. Information will be posted on this page when the public services are finalized.
Visitation at the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ 08822, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Chester Zalubski at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 2 White Bridge Road, Pittstown, NJ, and burial next to her beloved husband at Fairview Cemetery, 1100 East Broad Street, Westfield, NJ 07090, was private.
