To Helen's sister, nieces, and nephews, and extended family, "Children don't care what you know until they know that you care." This truly defines the person and teacher that Helen was. I had the pleasure of having Helen as a Language Arts teacher from 1967-68, while in 8th grade at Hillside School in Bridgewater, New Jersey. That single year of being with her has impacted me for the rest of my life. Somehow Helen saw me as the star of The Music Man that year and supported and encouraged me. I have never forgotten her and as people have spoken about their favorite teachers, she has always been mine. We did stay connected when I was in High School through theater, and I last saw her in the 1980's at a reunion for the Bridgewater High School teachers. I have just retired after 40 years of teaching and upon looking Helen up on Facebook I found her obituary.. So sorry I missed connecting with her one more time. I found some beautiful notes she wrote to me and will continue to treasure them and the memory of Helen. She made a difference. With kind regards, Laurie Barker Redel

Helen was such an important part of my family, going back at least 50 years. We will miss her dearly but will always remember the joy and love she brought into our lives. This picture was taken in 1980 in Wisconsin at my cousin Jeff and beautiful wife Sandy's wedding. Helen did a reading during the service. Rest in peace, Dear Friend.

When I found out of Helen's passing my heart was filled with grief. We both attended the Elementary Schools in Manville becoming very good friends. We were always doing school projects together and enjoyed acting in the school plays in which Helen was usually directing or producing. We kept in touch from time to time, however life takes you in different directions. I knew Helen with her great personality, wit, talent, kindness and love for her great family would someday touch everyone's heart and she certainly succeeded. Someday, when I see that brightest star in the sky, I will be thinking of you ...... I will miss you my friend.

Our deepest condolences to the family! What a lovely picture of her! Helen was one smart, authentic and classy lady. She was always so helpful at St. Anna's festival and will be sorely missed. We shared some history at St. George Piscataway and, surprisingly, she went to college with one of my sister's inlaws. Small world. Pete enjoyed her company as a Greek school classmate and serving with her together as Parish Council members. I will miss her terribly at St. Anna. Wishing peace and comfort to all her lovely family as they work through this difficult time. May her memory be eternal! ~ Diana and Pete Grina

Edith Hamilton wrote in her book The Greek Way: "..Greeks emphasize the bevity and the failure of all human endeavor, the swift passing of all that is beautiful and joyful....But never in their darkest moments, do they lose their taste for life. It is always a wonder and a delight, the world a place of beauty, and they themselves rejoicing to be alive in it. " Helen certainly exemplified the Greek taste for life and covered a lot of ground on her life's journey. It has been my joy and privilege to be a neighbor and friend of the Pappas family. After sharing Mr. Pappas's lamb dinners and vats of soup and dancing to Zorba the Greek in the livingroom, I feel like an honorary Greek. Let Helen's legacy be to savor each day and rejoice in the beauty around us whether you are born Greek or just Greek by proxy.

The decades of knowing Helen as a dedicated teacher and supervisor are good memories. I loved her double-takes when in her first year as department chair I'd say, "But that's not how Len did it...." Helen and Bert Weaver were the pillars of our trio that 'entertained' at the "Last of West" dinner in '91. Rest in peace, Helen.

I was so sorry to hear of Helen's passing. She was a very close friend to my mother, Peg Wittick as part of their "Craft Group" of friends. I was also fortunate to get to know her as well since that group "adopted' me into their meetings. I remember Helen as a very warm, intelligent and friendly person and I know my Mom loved her so much. Mom passed at the end of Jan this year so I'm hoping the two of them are hanging out together in Heaven, making beautiful wings for the angels. My deepest sympathies to Georgia, their family and all who loved Helen.

Dr. Pappas gave me my first real teaching job at Bridgewater West HS in 1990. She was busy running between the two district high schools at that time but always found time to give me helpful feedback and tips to improve my nascent teaching. I never forgot her and only regret that our paths did not cross again. May she rest in peace.

Helen was a wonderful mentor and colleague. She shared her professional expertise to ensure all students would be prepared to serve the greater good of others. I am grateful for the time we worked together, her perceptive sense of humor and the great meals we had at the Greek restaurant near her home. All the best to the family.

As some people journey through life, they leave footprints wherever they go - Footprints of kindness and love, courage and compassion, humor and inspiration, joy and faith. Even when they are gone we can still look back and very clearly see the trail left behind. So it was with this extraordinary woman. She was my mentor, coach, theatrical idol, role model and most of all someone I am so honored to call friend. She was my Mama Rose and I was her June always. Her wonderful spirit will be so greatly missed. I am better for having known her.

Dr. Pappas was truly my mentor. She believed in me and allowed me to be creative with instruction so that I could connect with as many students as possible, both those who were struggling and those who were gifted. She nurtured my knowledge and my confidence. In her retirement letter, she recommended me for the supervisor position she was leaving -- and I got the job. In so many ways, from comforting moments to challenging me with new courses, Dr. Pappas was one of the most influential people in my life. Even after she retired, she still kept watch, inviting me over for dinner to chat. Now I know she will watch from a higher place.

I cannot express enough gratitude to Dr. Pappas as my first supervisor as an English teacher at Bridgewater Raritan High School; she is perhaps on one of the most important and profound influences on shaping who I became as an educator: she valued and rewarded intelligence, hard work, professionalism and a passion for literature which, in turn, inspired literally thousands of students. I think of her often. Godspeed Dr. P—

I am so sorry about the passing of your beloved, Helen. Helen and I met at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, NJ. We were taught how to grade the Pricipals Licensing Exam and and later to train others to score. She was such an intelligent woman with a great sense of humor. Through the years we went to Sea Isle, Naples, FL, the Cape May Wine Festival, luncheons with fellow test trainers, etc. she will be sorely missed but forever in our hearts. A fond farewell, Helen.

What a classy lady Helen was! We bonded at church over our Greek Macedonian heritage. She would always joke about our link to Alexander the Great. Her wit and smile greeted me every Sunday during coffee hour. She would make a point of seeking me out to tell me she watched the Michigan State game and thought of my boys or saw something about Michigan on tv and thought about me. We often chuckled over our shared ‘bottled water for Sunday School” story. She was a pure joy, an intelligent woman with a great sense of humor. How I will miss her! May you Rest In Peace, dear Helen.
