Edna Jones Pedrick, age 97 years, of Flemington Borough, NJ, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2023, at Foothills Acres Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Hillsborough, NJ, with her son, Jim, at her side.
Born on September 18, 1925, in Jersey City, NJ, daughter of the late Edgar and Mary Blood Jones, Edna moved to Flemington at a very young age and was a lifelong area resident and truly a part of the fabric of the community.
With a zeal for life and anything Flemington, not many in town did not know the smile of, or the name of, Edna Jones Pedrick. A true volunteer to the core, Edna was involved in many things throughout her life that helped make Flemington a true “community”.
One of her most notable achievements was helping to ensure that Flemington Borough purchased the Fleming Castle and she helped to see it restored to the grandeur that stands today. A docent, she loved giving tours and helping keep the gardens extra beautiful. If anything around the museum needed to be done, chances are Edna was there helping to make it happen.
Serving for many years on the Flemington Borough Planning Board, Edna always strove to provide “historical context” to applications and was the voice that tried to move the Borough forward, while still preserving history.
The Shade Tree Commission also was a board that Edna was passionate about and her work included driving around town, watering planters from milk jugs in the trunk of her car, and even driving the water tanker truck when needed! She also helped organize the ‘Clean Communities Program’ for fifteen years, overseeing and of course feeding the volunteers with her famous rice pudding on cleanup days, and also served on the Beautification Committee tending to the seasonal planters and winter decorations helping to make Main Street in Flemington a truly remarkable sight.
Several years ago, Edna was given a resolution by the Flemington Borough Council which stated in part that she is, “a role model for community residents everywhere who want to make their community a better place to live for all.” Additionally, in 2016, she was named Grand Marshall of the Hunterdon Holiday Parade for her devotion to Flemington and Hunterdon County.
Besides serving the community in any way it needed her, Edna enjoyed knitting and birdwatching and of course spending time with her cherished family.
The anthropologist Margaret Mead once stated, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Edna Jones Pedrick will be forever remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, and community member who used her time and talents to make Flemington, Hunterdon County, and the world, a better place for all. To honor Edna, is to get involved using your own talents to continue to help make this world a more beautiful place for all peoples.
In addition to her husband, James B. Pedrick who died in 2000, Edna was preceded in death by a son, R. Wayne Pedrick in 2006.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, James English Pedrick and Kristen Pedrick; her daughters-in-law, Susan Longmuir, Mary Bunker, and Kimberly Pedrick; her grandchildren, Dwayne Pedrick, James R. Pedrick, Michaela Schamatz, and Ryan Pedrick; five great grandchildren, Zach, Jordy, Meredith, Nick, and Will; several extended family members; and many dear friends.
