Edward “Ed” Henry Vogel, age 84 years, of New Hope, PA, died peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Independence Manor, Raritan Township, NJ, under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Edward grew up in Old Bridge, NJ, the youngest of 3. He is predeceased by his sisters Anita (Smith) and Marion (Hettwer), as well as his parents Grace (Quackenbush) and Henry. Ed graduated from South River High School and went on to attend Rutgers University and the Newark College of Engineering (now known as NJIT), earning his degree in Civil Engineering. He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Barbara, in 1962. The couple honeymooned in Rangeley, Maine and fell in love with the remote beauty and peace of the Rangeley Lakes Region. They traveled to Western, Maine frequently with their family over their six-decade marriage, skiing Saddleback Mountain in the winter, and enjoying the lakes and hiking trails in the summer. In the early 1980’s, Ed and Barbara redirected their family’s skiing passion to Summit County, Colorado, igniting an enthusiasm for the Colorado Rockies that the next generation has embraced.
Edward began his engineering career with Johns Manville, but he very quickly recognized his talents with both real estate and home construction. He owned Vogel Gallery of Homes in New Brunswick before starting the Vogel Building and Development Corporation in the early 1970’s. In 1976, Ed relocated his family to Oldwick, NJ, where he embarked upon his long career in custom home construction and real estate development. He was the primary developer on Hell Mountain and he constructed many custom homes in and around Hunterdon County throughout the years.
In the early ’90’s, Ed and his business partner, Neil Van Cleef, developed the Stanton Ridge Golf & Country Club, where Ed was a founding member. He loved playing golf, and despite never quite mastering the sport itself, Ed enthusiastically shared his enjoyment of the game with his son-in-law, family, and friends. He played each and every round with a smile on his face, eagerly sharing conversations and stories with his golfing companions, just happy to be outside and sharing time with others. His stories – and his smile – were legendary.
Ed is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara (Shaluha), his daughter Elizabeth (Loew) and husband Darren, as well as four grandchildren, Sarah, Katherine, Meredith, and David.
