Elizabeth Elaine Serson, age 90 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, former longtime resident of Beach Haven West, NJ, died peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Newark, NJ, July 25, 1933, daughter of the late John and Catherine Glynn Ellis, Elizabeth was raised in Newark and had lived in Rahway, Colonia, and Warren, NJ, prior to moving full-time to Beach Haven West/Manahawkin in 1997.
Elizabeth, known affectionately as Liz, was a beacon of love, wisdom, and grace. Her life story of being a hard worker is well reflected in her entrepreneurial spirit, owning and operating an unemployment agency, Rahway Midtown, in Rahway, NJ, for many years where she helped countless people find work and future careers. She also spent several years working at Merck in Rahway, NJ, where she was adored by her colleagues and the public alike.
Her life story though, is better understood knowing that while “Down the Shore” with one of her dear friends during her formative years, she would meet a young sailor returning home to port named Andrew Serson. In what was a very short courtship, the pair would marry on St. Patrick’s Day 1955. This enduring love story transcended time and space and was a testament to the power of love and commitment. They were each other’s best friend, and their union brought them the two main joys of their life, a daughter, Debbie, and a son, Jack.
Family was Liz and Andrew’s world and they loved to entertain and see people smile. Their life was emboldened with the addition of the next generations, and Liz became a “Mom” and a “Grandma” to all of her children and grandchildren’s friends. Simply put, her love for her family extended beyond bloodlines, embracing friends who became family, creating a vibrant community of love and support for all. This community was also grounded on the foundation of Liz’s remarkable ability to listen attentively, offer sage advice, and share her strong opinions with empathy and care, which left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Andrew’s death in 1996 shook Liz, but she made a promise to live life for him until they were reunited. She seized each day fully, making memories with all whose hands she held gently, yet firmly. Liz’s passing on St. Patrick’s Day was a poignant reminder of her eternal bond with Andrew, as she was received into his loving embrace once again.
Throughout her life, Liz exemplified unwavering faith as a devout Catholic who found solace in daily prayers, particularly the rosary. An enthusiastic shopper and antiquing aficionado along the Jersey Shore, she delighted in the simple joys of life and shared her treasures with friends and family. Her home, a haven of warmth and hospitality, was always open, welcoming all with open arms.
Mother Teresa, now Saint Teresa of Calcutta, once said, “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. Be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to you without coming away better and happier.” Liz will forever be remembered for her infectious laughter, her boundless generosity, and her unparalleled ability to nurture and love unconditionally. Her love for the water and the Jersey Shore mirrored her own strength and resilience—a force to be reckoned with, yet always gentle and comforting. To honor Liz, is to go out and spread love, compassion, and kindness to all.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Ed Komoroski; her son, Jack Serson; her grandchildren and their spouses, Adam and Jenn Komoroski, Andrew and Ashley Serson, Alexandra and Dave Olexson, and William Serson; her great grandchildren, Aedan and Livia Komoroski; and many friends made as she traveled the path of life.
Liz will lie in repose on Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 8:30-9:30 a.m., in the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Rev. John Primich will follow the gathering on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ.
Burial with her beloved husband, Andrew, will follow at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, 53 Inman Avenue, Colonia, NJ, and to which all are welcome.
