Elsa Makatura Kachmar, of Danville, PA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 13, 2016 in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA.
Born in Pittstown, NJ, February 11, 1930, daughter of the late Frank and Mary Listkai Makatura, she had formerly resided in Mount Dora, FL and Flemington, NJ.
A 1948 graduate of Frenchtown High School, Frenchtown, NJ, Elsa owned and operated Kachmar Auction Service along with her late husband, John for many years. They were well respected in the auction community for their utmost professionalism and traveled all over the United States with their business.
Elsa was baptized in the Old St. Magdalen Church, located in Park Avenue in Flemington, NJ. Her faith was especially important to her and it directed much of her thoughts and actions in life. She was strong-willed but at the same time was extremely gentle and caring. Her work ethic was second to none, and she instilled the values of hard work and education in her children.
While living for most of her life in Flemington, she was very involved as an active member of St. Magdalen Church. Later upon moving to Danville, she became very active in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a member of its choir. She will be remembered for her exceptional cooking and baking skills and her stuffed cabbage is of a particular fond memory for many in the family.
Elsa was also a gardener; from fresh flowers to vegetables, she grew almost everything she could. Her knowledge of birds and the sounds they make is also something she passed on to her family. Bird watching while gardening became a fun hobby for all those who knew and assisted Elsa with the gardens.
She and John loved to travel and dancing was an important part of their life. If you knew them, you will surely remember them dancing a waltz or a polka, all with the biggest smiles in the room. As her family says, to sum it all up, Elsa was simply always there for them in all ways.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Kachmar in 2014 as well as by her husband of sixty-six years, John Peter Kachmar, Jr., on July 26 of this year.
Surviving are her children, Roseanna Backer and husband, James of Mount Dora, FL, Veronica Wisowaty of Danville, PA, John Kachmar III and wife, Sharon of East Greenville, PA, Elizabeth Kachmar of Danville, PA and David Kachmar and wife, Lisa of Milton, PA; ten grandchildren; two great grandsons; a sister, Viola Doster of Flemington, NJ; and many extended family and friends.
