Grace E. Roe, age 100 years, of Hillsborough Township, NJ, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Foothill Acres Rehabilitation & Nursing Center-LTC, Hillsborough Township, NJ
Grace was born August 14, 1923, daughter of the late George Roe and Minnie Rodgers Roe in Staten Island, NY.
Grace graduated from Curtis High School in Staten Island and her high school nickname was “Midge”. Upon graduation, Grace’s mission was to gain employment to help contribute to her family’s household; ultimately, she landed a job at AT&T in New York City in the traffic control bureau. Grace assisted keeping track of all the long-distance circuits throughout the US. After commuting every day on the Staten Island Ferry to New York City, Grace retired from AT&T after 43 years of service. Grace was a true Staten Islander, New Yorker, and a proud AT&T Pioneer.
Grace thought NYC was fantastic during the 40’s and 50’s and when she had free time, she felt fortunate to be able to see live performances of Frank Sinatra, the Glenn Miller Band, Tommy Dorsey, and many more. Grace loved to sing and could often be heard singing her favorite songs throughout the day and night! She had a beautiful voice and an enthusiastic appreciation for music – from classic big band to opera to country to rock n roll. Movies, plays, art, history, and reading the Wall Street Journal were among her favorite things. In recent years, Grace loved when her photo was posted on Facebook, and she relished reading the commentary.
Family was very important to Grace…she was known as the family historian. Grace took great care in detailing and documenting photo albums, postcards, and mementos, and she enjoyed sharing stories of her childhood and family.
At the age of 80, Grace bravely moved from Staten Island where she lived from birth, to Flemington, New Jersey to be closer to her family. In the “country”, she enjoyed her quiet apartment, family celebrations, Sundays at her niece’s pool, and eating lunch in New Hope, PA and Lambertville, NJ. Grace took her first plane ride at age 83 to Atlanta which, in her words, was “terrific”, she then traveled again, at age 85, to see her nephew in Sarasota, where she enjoyed soaking her toes in the Gulf and looking at all the shells.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brothers, Sonny, Edward, Daniel and Richard Roe; her sisters, Mildred Dante, Gertrude Roe, Shirley McDaniel, and Laura Speckin.
She is survived by her brother, Jack Roe and his wife, Anna Roe of Staten Island, NY; many nieces and nephews; several grand nieces and nephews; and dear friends.
Grace will lie in repose on Monday, October 23, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
