Joan S. Maccione, age 81 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving and devoted family.
Born in East Orange, NJ, October 11, 1935, daughter of the late Walter and Josephine Kuiper Smith, Joan grew up in Springfield, NJ and had formerly lived in New Providence, NJ for many years. She and her husband, Louis, have lived in Raritan Township since 1992. The also considered themselves, “snowbirds,” spending their winters in Holly Hill, FL.
Joan graduated the top of her class and became an executive secretary for several companies over the years, including Chubb & Son, Summit, NJ, Industrial Diamond Corp., New Providence, NJ and Schaible Oil Co., Springfield, NJ.
A former member of the Springfield United Methodist Church, Joan will forever be remembered as a loving daughter, wife, grandmother, sister and friend.
She was the ultimate “High School Band” mom, who did everything from washing the uniforms to selling roasted peanuts on cold nights at all the school events. She also was Brownie Troop leader for her daughter, Diane’s troop and supported her as she went through Girl Scouts.
Caring, loving and sweet in all her actions, Joan loved to have fun and was known to be the Bingo champion among her friends in Florida. If there was a Bingo game being played, Joan was probably there with her multi-colored Bingo markers that her grandchildren always bought for her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant brother, Walter Smith, Jr. in 1947.
Surviving are her devoted husband with whom she joined hands in marriage on November 2, 1957 in Springfield, NJ, Louis Maccione; her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Michael Wehrle of Raritan Township, NJ; her two grandchildren, Heather and husband, Matthew Shumate of Hollywood, MD and Michael L. Wehrle, currently attending Towson University in Maryland; and many extended family and friends.
Joan will lie in repose on Friday, October 14, 2016 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
Family graveside services and burial will take place privately in Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover, NJ.
