John J. Kelly, Sr., age 79 years, of East Amwell Township, NJ, died on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, October 26, 1936, son of the late Michael and Ellen McDonell Kelly, he had resided in East Amwell for the past thirty-five years, having formerly lived in Staten Island, NY and in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, NY.
John had formerly worked for many years for the City of New York as a Building Inspector. He then went on to own and operate a construction business, “Homes of Distinction.” Finally, he retired from Palomar Builders, Princeton, NJ as a Project Manager.
A longtime communicant of St. Alphonsus Church, Hopewell, NJ, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years, John will be forever remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who loved having his entire family together.
He was a hard worker and did all he could to support his family; if you ever needed anything, John was the one to call.
Some of the most memorable family times took place each October, as John opened up the family farm for hayrides and tours for hundreds of family members and friends. His rides on the gator, his horses and the infamous hay bale rides will not soon be forgotten.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Joseph Kelly and a sister, Helen Kelly Smith.
Surviving are his wife of sixty years, Bernadette C. Quinn Kelly, with whom he joined hands in marriage on February 12, 1956 in Brooklyn, NY; his children and their spouses, John J. Kelly, Jr. and his wife, Theresa of Staten Island, NY, Brian Kelly of Brooklyn, NY, Sharen Mireider and her husband, David of Montgomery Township, NJ and Michael Kelly and wife, Gabriella of Hamilton Square, NJ; eleven grandchildren, Caitlin, Brianne, John, McKenzie, Brendan, Devin, Cameron, Logan, Aidan, Dean and Bryce; two great grandchildren, Shannon and Christian; two brothers, Daniel Kelly and his wife, Cathy and Edward Kelly; three sisters, Eileen Kelly, Mary Kelly and Joan Kelly; and many extended family and friends.
Funeral services officiated by Msgr. Michael J. Walsh will take place Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
Interment in the family plot in Brooklyn, NY will be private.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. as well as Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from 10:30-11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
