John “Jack” Bevis, age 79 years, of the Rocktown section of West Amwell Township, NJ, returned to the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, peacefully on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Trenton, NJ, May 4, 1943, son of the late John D. Bevis and Estelle Parsons Bevis, he was a lifelong area resident.
A 1962 graduate of Hunterdon Central Regional High School, where he played drums in the All-State Band, Jack entered the New Jersey National Guard after high school then proceed to follow his dream and refine his skills as true master craftsman and woodworker.
Owning and operating Village Cabinet Shop out of his barn in Rocktown, the legend of Jack’s skills spread far and wide to the point he did not need to advertise much as his work and word of mouth referrals provided more than enough business. He was known to be able to strategically solve any job and his work was impeccable and extremely creative.
A longtime member of the Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church, Ringoes, NJ, faith was at the root of who Jack was as a disciple of God’s love. Often quoting biblical passages, he greatly enjoyed being a missionary of Christian values and encouraged all those he met to form a relationship with Jesus.
Meeting his future wife, Barbara, in 1986, the two formed a friendship that turned into a deep love based on mutual respect and true devotion for one another. Jack was Barbara’s confidant and best friend, and with her being a teacher at Barley Sheaf Elementary School in Raritan Township for many years, Jack was a surrogate educator to “their kids” as he helped with anything and everything relating to the school. From delivering palm trees and a grass hut which were stored in their basement for the annual luau to once, for a school play, creating a wooden illuminated “time machine” that everyone thought might even work, Jack was always there to help whenever able.
A lover of nature and of all animals, Jack also had an affinity for the Outer Banks of North Carolina where he and Barbara maintained a summer residence. When he was not tinkering in his shop or reading his Bible, you could usually find Jack enjoying an episode of Star Trek or MASH.
In the Bible, it is written in 2 Kings 22:6-7, the carpenters, the builders, and the masons, and buy the timber and the stones used in the repairs. The men in charge of the work are thoroughly honest, so there is no need to require them to account for the funds. In John 14:1-6, we hear Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jack knew that by being an honest and loyal soul on Earth, as was written in Kings, he would surely find fulfillment in the promises of John 14. Having fought many medical ailments over the years, Jack has surely received his crown of righteousness and is certainly adding some beautiful, custom crown molding to the mansion in Heaven where he now resides.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin sister, Shirley Reimenschnitter; and his brother, James Bevis.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Daniel Wilson; his grandson, Matthew Wilson and his wife, Heather; his dear friend and her entire family, who Jack considered another daughter and affectionately called him “Papa Bear”, Bonnie K. Garrett and her husband, Andrew, and their children, Olivia and Andrew; his brother-in-law, Henry Reimenschnitter; his nieces, Tammy Reimenschnitter and Debbie Malack; his adored canine companions, Abby, Bailey, and Willow; several extended family members; and many dear friends.
