John Joseph Guminak, Jr., age 82 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family and under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
John was born August 17, 1941, in Bayonne, NJ, to the late John J. Guminak, Sr. and Francis (Kuczynsky) Guminak.
He attended the Vocational Division of Printing at Bayonne High School and graduated salutatorian. He continued his education at the New York school of Printing and later taught there as well. Throughout his career he took many classes in early computing and electronics. Growing up, he loved to tinker with cars, and could fix anything. This served him well in the army reserves where he instructed others in how to drive tanks.
After the army he joined the International Typographical Union. He started his career in printing at the Jersey Printing Company in Bayonne, NJ, and eventually became Publishing Systems Foreman at the New York Daily News. From Elizabeth, NJ, and then Springfield, NJ, he moved his young family to Hillsborough, NJ, where they spent the majority of their lives. He enjoyed vacationing at the beach and loved fishing and crabbing. He also loved large gatherings with family and friends and dancing with his wife, Janice. He enjoyed singing, especially in church.
One day, while leaving work, John was hit by a car and suffered catastrophic brain injury. He persevered and survived, but his life was changed. No longer able to work in New York, he became active in the Millstone Reformed Church as a Deacon and a custodian.
He and his wife retired to Vermont in 2004 to be closer to their son and daughter-in-law and to watch their grandchildren grow up. John always had a way with the kids. They loved his silliness and his warmth, and he loved them. They really enjoyed their time in Vermont, and they had a rich life there.
In 2020, they moved back to New Jersey to be closer to their daughter and to services to help with his care. Despite his injuries, and the challenges they presented him with, John always held on to his humorous spark and brought joy to those around him.
John leaves to cherish his memory his wife of fifty-seven years, Janice (Kuhlman) Guminak; his daughter, Elizabeth (Guminak) Roenning and son-in -law, Jeff Roenning; his son, John Guminak and daughter-in-law, Dianne (Fellows) Guminak; and three adored grandchildren, Owen, Isabelle, and Cameron. He is also survived by two sisters, Joanie (Guminak) Russo, and Francis (Guminak) Stein, and brother-in-law, Hal Stein, as well as several nieces and nephews.
John will lie in repose on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, from 1:00-1:30 p.m. at Three Bridges Reformed Church, 470 Main Street, Three Bridges, NJ 08887, under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
A life celebration service officiated by Rev. Ryan Nace will follow the gathering beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the church and to which all are welcome.
Following the service, John will be laid to rest in the Three Bridges Reformed Church Cemetery, located on the church grounds.
