Joseph Henry Earl, 69, of Somerset, New Jersey, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital on August 3, 2023. He was born on November 28,1953 in Winslow, Washington to the late Joseph and Alice (Lidberg) Earl.
Joe married the love of his life, JoAnn (Kinsey) on July 12, 1975, in Lafayette, Indiana. They met at Purdue University where he received his B.S. in Engineering in 1980. He furthered his education by earning his M.S. in Engineering Management from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL in 1987.
Joe is survived by his wife of 48 years, JoAnn, and their six children: Liz (Jeff) Weir, Joe (Lorelle), Allison (Jakob) Schneider, Kevin (Giovana), Tanya (Kevin) Hartwyk, and Kristen (Tom) Rietzl. Joe’s 13 grandchildren: Aidan, Avery, Abby, Karsen, Chase, Ella, Brody, Bryce, Parker, Codey, Liam, Connor, and Madelyn were the pride and joy of his life.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws, John and Betty Kinsey, and his brother, Jeff Earl.
Joe retired in March of 2023 as the Administrative Director of Facilities at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, New York. He spent 41 years as an engineer impacting the lives of many who worked beside him. His dedication and expertise in his field were both extensive and admirable. When Joe wasn’t engrossed in his work as an engineer, you could typically find him indulging in his favorite pastime, spending quality time with his family.
Joe was the legendary creator of “Earl Punch” which was served at every family gathering. He enjoyed hosting family birthdays and holiday celebrations where he would cook with his grandchildren and allow each child to grab one handful of coins from his jar to take home at each visit. He was a creative wordsmith at Scattergories and the most convincing liar at Balderdash. He loved to tell stories and always knew what was happening in the lives of those most important to him. His daily phone calls and check-ins will be missed.
Joe enjoyed traveling on family vacations and taking cruises with his wife later in life. He never forgot a birthday or anniversary and always found ways to make you feel special. He was the true patriarch of the family. His legacy will be honored and remembered always.
A Celebration of Life will be private and held at a future date.
