Julio R. Lopes, a man of unwavering dedication and entrepreneurial spirit, peacefully departed this world on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ, following a valiant battle with Leukemia and underlying heart conditions.
Born in Alfeizerão, Portugal, on July 24, 1956, son of the late Silvino Lopes and Arminda Rebelo, Julio embarked on a transformative journey at the age of 11, relocating with his family to Rhodesia, a community that became his home. He embraced the challenges of life, welcomed his children, Sonia and Paulo, and later served in the African military, meanwhile cultivating a passion for Mini Coopers as a skilled mechanic.
In 1984, Julio immigrated to the United States and was eventually joined by his son, Paulo. A seasoned mechanic, he traveled extensively, even venturing into the bustling metropolis of New York City to repair Zamboni ice machines—a task he vocally lamented but secretly relished. His love for his family deepened with the addition of Carolina, a fellow Portuguese immigrant, and together they established a loving home and later welcomed their daughter, Joana.
The Lopes family’s journey unfolded across various locales in New Jersey, from Basking Ridge to Bridgewater, and ultimately settling in Flemington where their household expanded to include seven grandchildren. An avid enthusiast of Go Kart racing in his earlier years, Julio reveled in building, fixing, and racing with his children Domingos, Paulo, and Sofia. Many memories were made amongst this beautiful family that will be held in their hearts forever.
Within the solitude of his office, Julio found solace as an amateur HAM radio operator, connecting with operators worldwide and actively participating in contests, particularly with his son-in-law, Nuno. His extensive collection of call signs reflected the pride he took in fostering global connections. Furthermore, he proudly contributed to Readington Township as an on-call emergency radio broadcaster.
A luminary in the realm of landscaping, Julio was the esteemed owner of Lopes Lawns & Landscaping for over three decades. His legacy is imprinted on the verdant landscapes he meticulously crafted, showcasing an exceptional eye for design that transformed gardens into masterpieces. His commitment to excellence garnered the loyalty of numerous clients, a testament to his unparalleled skill in the field.
The Lopes Farm, a cherished property acquired by Julio and Carolina, served as a testament to his passion for nature. Transforming the land into an oasis, he meticulously cultivated fields, tended to gardens, and fostered a unique bond with the farm’s animals. His affinity for his cows was particularly notable, demonstrating a genuine connection that defined his character.
Julio R. Lopes leaves behind a rich legacy marked by industriousness, creativity, and a profound love for family. His impact resonates in the landscapes he shaped, the connections he forged, and the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace – “73” from the family.
In addition to his devoted wife, Carolina, he is survived by two sons, Domingos Silva & Paulo Lopes; three daughters, Sonia Rybicki, Sofia Carvalho, & Joana Lopes; a brother, Helder Lopes; seven grandchildren, Bianca, Liana, Gabriela, Michael, Nicolas, Justin, & Zara; one great granddaughter, Talia, his faithful furry companion, Jack; several extended family members; and many dear friends.
Family and friends will gather on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
