Nancy Robertson Lommel, age 102 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Independence Manor, Raritan Township, NJ, under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.
Born on July 8, 1921, in Lake Grove, OR, Nancy’s life was a shining example of resilience and love.
During World War II, Nancy and her sister, Claribel, courageously enlisted in the Navy as WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), serving honorably and attaining the rank of Yeoman First Class. It was during her service in Galveston, TX, that she crossed paths with Richard Lommel, her future husband, leading to a beautiful union in 1949. Together, they embarked on a journey that spanned half a century until Richard’s passing in 1999.
Nancy attended Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, before she and Richard settled in Middlesex, NJ, to raise a family. As a mother and homemaker, Nancy provided warmth, love, and a great sense of humor, passing down these traits to the next generation.
Nancy truly lived a life worthy of celebration, and her impact and influence on her family will last far beyond her lifetime. Nancy was a mother to four daughters, predeceased by her eldest, Anne DeCicco, and survived by Cris Lommel, Sue Tavaglione (John), and Laura Millen (John). Her stories, recipes, and memory will live on through her ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren (with another on the way), and one great-great-grandchild.
Nancy’s last years were spent joyfully, surrounded by family and caretakers who adored her, with walls filled with photos of her ever-expanding family tree. She will be missed, but her over a century on this planet will not soon be forgotten and generations hence will be better because of her life.
