Nicholas J. Gurski, age 95 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 in Overlook Medical Center, Summit, NJ.
Born in New York City, NY, July 25, 1920, son of the late Felix and Mary Marcisyzn Gurski, he was raised on a farm off route 579 in Raritan Township and was a lifelong area resident.
A graduate of Flemington High School, Flemington, NJ, Nicholas was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Flying many missions as a gunner in a B-17 over Germany and all across Europe, he was stationed in North Hampsed in southern England and faithfully served his country until being honorably discharged at the wars end.
He was employed by American Cyanamid for over forty-three years as a maintenance mechanic, retiring in 1984.
A communicant of St. Magdalen Church, Flemington, NJ, he was involved in his community in many ways including serving as a Weblos Leader for Cub Scouts; being a member of the Flemington American Legion Post #159; and being a Coach for little league baseball.
Nicholas loved to garden and made his own pickles which his whole family raced to get jars of each year. Most of all though, he will be remembered for his gentle and loving spirit which was exhibited most during the tender care he gave for both his wife, Jennie and his brother-in-law, Thomas, during each of their long illnesses.
His wife of fifty-four years, whom he married in the old St. Magdalen Church on Park Avenue in Flemington, Jennie A. Rozborski Gurski, died in 2002.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and Raymond Kolanko of Mountainside, NJ; a son and his significant other, Nicholas T. Gurski and Cheryl Kirk of Shallotte, NC; five grandsons, John and wife, Dawn Gurski of Lower Mt. Bethel, PA, James and wife, Jamie Gurski of Nazareth, PA, Jeffrey and wife, Brittany Gurski of Riverview, FL, Kenneth Kolanko of Newark, NJ and Michael Kolanko of Lavallette, NJ; five great grandchildren, Cody, James Jr., Tyler, Baily and Aubrey; and many extended family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Timothy Christy on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Magdalen Cemetery, North Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 8:30-9:00 a.m.
The Flemington American Legion will render honors Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
