Peter G. Papas, age 90 years, of Ringoes, NJ, died on Monday, April 18, 2016 at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Sparta Greece, February 13, 1926, son of the late George and Helen Primpas Papastavros, he had resided in Ringoes, NJ for the past eighteen years, having formerly lived in Newton, MA, Harwich Port, MA and Londonderry, NH.
Peter was an Industrial Engineer with J. W. Greer, Wilmington, MA as well as with Baldwin, Lyma and Hamilton, Waltham, MA. He also operated the Papas Insurance Agency, Newton, MA. Later on in life, he managed the Susse Chalet in Salem, NH along with his wife, Catherine Parises Papas. She died on September 19, 2015 after fifty-seven years of marriage.
A Spartan who was extremely proud of his Greek heritage, Peter was also very proud to be a United States citizen and even prouder of his military service serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a longtime member of the Flemington American Legion Post #159, Flemington, NJ.
Peter was a very proud and supportive man to all those who knew him. He believed that hard work was its own reward and that the key to success was rooted in a good education. He was keen on world events and kept an eye on politics and was very knowledgeable on varied subjects; his letters to various prominent public public servants drew personal letters of response by those folks, including several pieces of correspondence from the White House. His writing ability also led him to co-author a cookbook with Catherine.
He was deeply involved with all the sporting teams of New England; the New England Patriots, the Boston Celtics and Red Sox always made for a fun time. A family man, he loved to just simply be around those he loved and this genuine love will be the prominent part of his legacy.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Michael Varas of Ringoes, NJ; a son, George Papas of Spring Hill, FL; three grandchildren, Alexander and Loukas Varas and Amber Papas; his two adopted children, Tor Shekerjian and Paul Dunleavy; a brother and sister-in-law, Theodore and Mary Papastavros; a sister, Mary Gavrilles; and many friends.
Funeral services officiated by Father Anastasios Kousoulas will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Anna Greek Orthodox Church, 85 Voorhees Corner Road, Flemington, NJ, 08822 under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
Interment with full military honors will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, Wrightstown, NJ 08562.
Calling hours will be Monday, April 25, 2016 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home with a Trisagion Service at 6:00 p.m. and American Legion Honor Services at 6:30 p.m.
