Philip “Phil” Longfellow Bagley, age 96 years, of Bridgewater Township, NJ, died on Saturday, August 29, 2015 in Brandywine Senior Living at Middlebrook Crossing, where he had resided since October of 2014.

Born in Machias, ME, May 28, 1919, son of the late C. Alton and Celia Longfellow Bagley, he had formerly lived in Needham, MA for ten years and Wellesley, MA for over forty years.

Phil was a United States Coast Guard veteran of World War II, being honorably discharged at the war’s end at the rank of Lieutenant. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics from Bowdoin College in Maine and then went on to attain an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Phil served as an accountant for many years with New England Telephone, Boston, MA.

A humble man, he was known by his family to be a fountain of knowledge across a breadth of subject areas, specifically world history and geography. An avid bridge and trivial pursuit player, he also loved to play Jeopardy every night on television, most of the time being able to correctly answer the final Jeopardy question.

Above all else though, Phil was genuinely interested in everyone that he met. He was an extremely generous and caring man both to his family and to anyone and anything that he cared about. This trait of genuine caring is but just one of his lasting legacies.

He was married to the love of his life for over sixty-six years, Margaret O’Neil Bagley, who preceded him in death in 2012. He was also pre-deceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Marilyn Bagley.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Peter Bagley and Jackie Doig of Saginaw, MI; a daughter and son-in-law, Ginny and Michael Rutkowski of Flemington, NJ; four grandchildren, Alice and Calvin Bagley and Jeff and Kate Rutkowski; and three nieces, Mary Beth Gaddis, Ruth Simokaitis and Anne Phipps.

Private funeral services and interment are under the care of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ.
