Thomas Doshna, age 78 years, of Monroe Township, NJ, died on Thursday, October 13, 2016 (11 Tishrei 5777), at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on October 24, 1937 to the late Peter and Rose Pazan Doshna, Tom was raised in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY and lived in Oceanside, NY for many years, before moving to New Jersey in the late 1990’s.
A 1955 graduate of Long Island City High School, Queens, NY, Tom retired after a long career in retail at the age of 70 in 2007.
Tom was above all else a devoted family man. This love of family and friends was instilled into his children and grandchildren who live on carrying this legacy. He was the person who could relate to almost anyone, and when meeting him for the first time within a short time you would most likely be good friends. The “people person” attitude always began with, “Let me tell you a story…,” which usually resulted in a few laughs and also helping Tom get to know the person he was talking to and vice versa. His children fondly recall his dedication to hard work, responsibility and always doing right by others.
A lifelong and avid New York Yankees fan, Tom never missed watching a game once he retired, and attended Spring Training in Florida as much as he could. He also greatly enjoyed fishing, both salt water and fresh water. Fishing off the dock at Bay Park in East Rockaway, NY was where he taught many life lessons to his sons, Jeffrey and Jonathan, whose memories of those times will be forever cherished.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Doshna in 1994 as well as by his daughter-in-law, Sarah K. Doshna in 2010.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of forty-five years, Vivian Weiner Doshna, with whom he joined hands in marriage on June 27, 1971 in Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY; a son, Jeffrey Peter Doshna of Flemington, NJ; a son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan Douglas and Pasqualina Doshna of Howard Beach, NY; five grandchildren, Noah Alexander Doshna, Benjamin Mack Doshna, Samuel Joseph Doshna, Carmela Maria Doshna and Sebastian Doshna; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gloria and Stanley Shaw of Warrington, PA; and their children, Barry and Marjorie Shaw and Judith and Louis Cohen.
Funeral Services officiated by Rabbi Jacob Malki will take place on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Flemington Jewish Community Center, 5 Sergeantsville Road, Flemington, NJ under the care and direction of Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ. Burial will follow in the family plot at Flemington Jewish Community Cemetery, 67 Capner Street, Flemington, NJ.
