Thomas James Batlle, age 81 years, of Ringoes, NJ, died on Friday, January 8, 2015 in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Hackensack, NJ, September 9, 1934, son of the late John Amando and Marion Rose Shinners Batlle, he had resided in Ringoes since 1947, having grown up in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ.
Tom graduated from LaSalle Military Academy, Oakdale, NY then went on to attend Fordham University. A United States Army veteran, he also served for several years in the New Jersey Army National Guard following his honorable discharge.
He owned and operated Poffley Feed, Ringoes, NJ for many years as well as Station Building Supply, Ringoes, NJ. Tom then went on to work with the maintenance division of the Hillsborough Golf Club and also ran, “The Ridge,” a bar at the golf course for which he will be remembered by many.
Tom was a loyal and devoted lifetime member of the Clinton Elks Benevolent Organization, #2434, for many years. He served in many capacities with the lodge, including Trustee, Inner Guard, and volunteer bartender. He earned the nickname, “Tuesday Tom,” and will be remembered by his friends as a wonderful jokester and storyteller who was the famous Grouse Scotch Connoisseur and the Budweiser King.
He came from a true farming family and family and friends came first. He loved hunting and all outdoor activities and was the host of an annual claybird shooting competition each year at his farm to help raise funds for the Elks.
Tom was also a loyal and devoted member of the Flemington American Legion Post #159 as well as the Flemington V.F.W. Post #7856. It is said of Tom, that the phrase which captures him best is, “I’m Tom, I’m everybody’s friend!”
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Mark Batlle this past December.
Surviving are his son, Thomas James Batlle, Jr. of Woodstock, VA; his daughter, Suzanne Batlle Kanach of East Amwell Township, NJ; his brother and sister-in-law, John Amando Batlle, Jr. and Jackie Batlle; five grandchildren, Todd, Emily, Kathryn, Candice and Natalie; two great grandchildren, Gunner Lee and Samuel Thomas; three nephews; and many friends.
Funeral Services officiated by Rev. John Primich will take place on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in Wright & Ford Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38 State Highway 31, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in the family plot in Rosemont Cemetery, Route 519, Rosemont, NJ. Following the committal service, everyone is invited to return with the family to the Clinton Elks, 211 Sidney Road, Pittstown, NJ, 08867.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Monday, January 11, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with an Elks Service at 7:00 p.m. and joint V.F.W. and American Legion honors at 7:15 p.m.
